What counts as social proof
Here, social proof means any signal that other people bought, use or endorse the product: customer counts, star ratings, press logos, expert or clinician badges, certification badges, and testimonials. Reviews have their own page at review and star rating tests.
The answer first: win/loss record
21 wins, 2 flat, 0 losses. That record includes several redesigns where social proof was one change among many, so the cleaner evidence is the single-change tests below.
Where social proof was tested
Next to the add-to-cart button
Ruben put customer social proof under the add-to-cart button instead of payment and policy icons and reported +5.25% conversion rate. Dave Diederen's certification badge near the price and ATC won +2.67% conversion rate.
Oliver Kenyon moved social proof and Add to Cart into the first view on mobile with tighter spacing and reported +$47,927/month.
Matched to the visitor
The ad-angle match won +12.70% conversion rate, though AOV fell -2.63%. Dave Diederen also showed proof featuring both women and men instead of women only and reported +6.95% conversion rate.

Homepage, checkout and site-wide
Ruben's trust bar below the navigation with "34,000+ customers" reported +55% conversions. In checkout, Peter Christensen added a customer trust count and 3 USPs and saw checkout conversion go from 69% to 76% while the test was still running.
Biggest wins and their numbers
The biggest clean result runs against the idea that more proof is better. Dave Diederen's new product page layout focused on benefits instead of social proof won +35.3% conversion rate and +44.6% profit per visitor.
Other removals also won: hiding an "As Seen On" press bar on the homepage for paid traffic (+3.55% conversion rate) and hiding a social proof slider at the top of an advertorial (+2.96% revenue per visitor).
Larger numbers come from bundles of changes: Kasper Dolk's long-form landing page flow (+259.7% revenue) and Oliver Kenyon's homepage hero with a 4.9/5 rating and press logos (+$78,454/month).
Tests that lost or were flat
Ruben's doctor or expert endorsement badge showed +17% conversion rate after one week at 99.6% probability, then faded to +1.66% after four weeks, which Ruben reads as most likely noise. Dave Diederen's "Clinician Recommended" badge was flat across 76k+ visitors.
Two flat authority badges are a pattern worth respecting. Ruben's test is also a reminder to run tests for full weeks before calling them.
Design patterns that won
- A short proof line directly under the add-to-cart button.
- Proof that mirrors the ad the visitor clicked.
- People in the proof who look like the full customer base.
- A customer count in a slim bar under the navigation.
- Press logos moved out of the buying area, or removed.
How to add or change social proof on Shopify
Most of these changes are a text block or an image under the buy button, added in the theme editor or a page builder. See Shopify page builders and the broader social proof guide.
How to test it on your store
Start with a hypothesis tied to placement or relevance, not quantity: a proof line under the ATC that matches the ad will lift conversion rate. Measure revenue per visitor and AOV, since the ad-match test cut AOV.
Run at least two full weeks, as Ruben's badge test shows, and check traffic needs with the sample size calculator. Untested ideas worth trying: Milos's units sold instead of a low review count, Kasper Dolk's openly stacked proof instead of sliders, and Dave Diederen's 'sold today' line below the ATC.
Questions
Does social proof increase ecommerce conversions?
In 23 measured tests, 21 won and 2 were flat. Placement and relevance mattered more than volume: Dave Diederen's proof line under the ATC matched to the ad angle won +12.70% conversion rate, while a layout with less social proof and more benefits won +35.3%.
Do expert or doctor endorsement badges work?
Both tests here were flat. Ruben's doctor or expert badge went from +17% after one week to +1.66% after four weeks, and Dave Diederen's 'Clinician Recommended' badge showed no change across 76k+ visitors.
Should I show 'As Seen In' press logos?
Dave Diederen hid an 'As Seen In' banner on a product page and won +5.63% revenue per visitor, and hid an 'As Seen On' bar on a homepage for paid traffic and won +3.55% conversion rate.
