Trust Badge A/B Tests: What 12 Measured Results Show

Of 12 measured trust badge tests, 11 won and 1 was flat, with no recorded losses. The clearest pattern: a badge on its own moved conversion by a few percent at most, and the large numbers came from tests where trust signals were one part of a wider above-the-fold or buy-box change.

The cleanest isolated test is Dave Diederen's certification badge near the price and Add to Cart, which gained +2.67% conversion rate. Ruben's doctor/expert authority badge looked like +17% after one week and settled at a flat +1.66% after four.

Below you'll find where trust badges were tested, the biggest results, the flat one, and how to run your own test. The grid lists every result and idea.

What counts as a trust badge

In this collection, a trust badge is any small visual signal meant to reduce risk: certification and authority badges, secure checkout seals, warranty and security buttons, and short trust bars with claims like local shipping or a customer count.

Several tests changed trust badges together with other elements, so the result can't be pinned on the badge alone. Those are flagged below.

The win/loss record

11 wins, 1 flat, 0 losses. Treat this with care: practitioners tend to share wins, so a clean record here does not mean trust badges always help.

Where trust badges were tested

  • Product page: 7 tests
  • Site-wide: 2 tests
  • Collection page, homepage, cart: 1 test each

The product page dominates, and most of those tests put the badge near the price or the Add to Cart button.

Biggest wins and their numbers

Ruben's trust bar below the navigation (local shipping, patented since 2014, 34,000+ customers) reported +55% conversions. The post gives no further metrics.

Peter Christensen added Warranty and Security buttons below Add to Cart and moved product info into accordions: +41.42% conversion rate and +27.26% revenue per visitor at 95.64% confidence. Because the layout changed too, the badge's share of that lift is unknown.

Oliver Kenyon has four wins where trust signals were part of an above-the-fold or cart rebuild:

Dave Diederen's wider tests also included trust: a collection banner with review count, trust signals and free shipping (+15.84% CVR, +25.37% RPV) and four homepage hero variations (+15.52% CVR).

The flat test

Ruben's authority badge test is the most useful one here. After one week it showed +17% conversion rate at 99.6% probability. After four weeks it was +1.66%, which Ruben called flat. The early lift was noise.

Design patterns that won

  • Next to the decision. The isolated wins put the badge by the price, under Add to Cart, or as a trust line under the button, as in Dave's bundle selector redesign (+8.66% RPV).
  • Specific claims. The trust bars that won named concrete facts (patent year, customer count, local shipping) rather than generic seals.
  • Part of a cleaner layout. The biggest lifts came alongside cutting clutter above the fold.

How to add or change trust badges on Shopify

Most themes let you add an icon or image block under the buy buttons in the product template through the theme editor. A trust bar under the header usually goes in as a custom section or announcement-style block. Keep the badge small enough that it doesn't push Add to Cart down on mobile.

How to test it on your store

Hypothesis: shoppers hesitate over a specific risk (fake product, payment safety, warranty), and a badge naming that risk near Add to Cart will lift conversion. Metric: revenue per visitor, with conversion rate as a secondary.

Expect a small effect like Dave's +2.67%, which needs a large sample to detect. Use the sample size calculator and run full weeks; Ruben's week-one +17% is the reason. See how long to run an A/B test.

Questions

Do trust badges increase conversion rate?

In this archive, 11 of 12 trust badge tests won and 1 was flat. Badges tested on their own produced small lifts, such as Dave Diederen's +2.67% conversion rate from a certification badge near Add to Cart. The larger lifts came from tests that changed other parts of the page too.

Where should trust badges go on a product page?

The isolated wins placed them near the price, directly under Add to Cart, or as a trust line under the button. Peter Christensen's Warranty and Security buttons below Add to Cart sat in a test that gained +41.42% conversion rate, though the layout changed at the same time.

How long should I run a trust badge test?

Run it for full weeks until you reach your planned sample size. Ruben's authority badge test showed +17% after one week and only +1.66% after four, so stopping early would have reported a false win.
