Why headlines and copy matter on the product page
The product title is usually the biggest text on the page, and most stores use it for the product name.
These tests use that spot to say what the product does for the buyer.
The copy around the title and the buy button gets the same treatment.
Measured results
Benefit-led titles and headlines (8 tests)
- Dave Diederen's "Achieve [outcome] with [product]" title: +15.61% conversion rate, +16.92% revenue per visitor.
- "Improve Your Skin from Home with the LED Face Mask": +10.47% conversion rate, +12.36% revenue per visitor.
- Benefit-first instead of product-first wording: +6.96% conversion rate, +11.67% revenue per visitor.
- Two benefit words such as "Sweat-Proof": +$267,576 extra profit. An emotion-led title added +$24,000/month.
- Kasper Dolk's desired-outcome hero headline: +$823,115.54 revenue per year. Kasper Dolk reports an outcome headline plus an objection-handling tagline won about +10% across several clients, and a benefit-led buy box won +$141,673 at 100% confidence.
Body copy angles (2 tests)
Oliver Kenyon rewrote general claims as pain-point benefit copy: +$159K/month.
Dave Diederen rewrote descriptions around the risks of not using the product: +32.75% conversion rate and +41.90% revenue per visitor.
What sits next to the title (5 tests)
Dave Diederen moved review stars above the title for +9.26% conversion rate, and added rating and review count above it for +8.14%.
A "Best Seller" label above the title won +11.59%.
Price and compare-at savings below the title won +7.39%, and price below the title won +3.13% with a reported ~90% win rate across 20+ brands.
Microcopy near the buy button (3 tests)
Dave Diederen matched the social proof line under add to cart to the visitor's ad angle: +12.70% conversion rate, though AOV fell 2.63%.
Shorter guarantee copy won +13.08%. Plain "Add to Cart" also beat "Try Risk Free Today", "Get Yours Now" and "Start Your Journey" every time.
Redesigns led by a new headline (3 tests)
Milos reported +81% conversion rate and +50% revenue per visitor from rebuilds, and Oliver Kenyon's outcome headline with context visuals won +25% conversion rate. These changed images and layout too.
Losing or flat tests
Dave Diederen placed a review rating above the title and saw no conversion rate change, with +1.30% revenue per visitor.
That sits awkwardly beside the two star-rating wins above.
Making the rating static was counted a win on +1.36% revenue per visitor, but conversion rate did not change either.
Untested ideas
- Kasper Dolk suggests transformation headlines such as "Wake Up Refreshed (Even If You're a Terrible Sleeper)" and a subheadline stating benefit, timeline and outcome.
- Kasper Dolk also suggests rewriting specs as benefits and keeping paragraphs to 3-4 lines.
- Dave Diederen suggests guarantee copy with a usage rate: "Less than 1% of customers used our 30-day money-back guarantee".
- Josh Thompson describes many benefit-copy rewrites, such as "Soft on skin, wicks away sweat", but shows no test data.
Placement and design patterns that won
- The title states an outcome, not just the product name.
- Stars, a badge or price sit right next to the title.
- Copy names a pain, a risk or the visitor's ad angle.
