Why shipping messaging matters on the product page
Shoppers want to know when an order will arrive and what shipping costs before they add to cart.
If the product page doesn't say, they guess, or go and check, and some don't come back.
Measured results
Ship-by dates under the ATC
This is the strongest pattern in the set.
Dave Diederen's "Ships by [date]" plus "Free shipping over $X" below the ATC won +26.62% conversion rate and +28.25% revenue per visitor. Nothing else on the page changed.
Dave repeated the idea with a localized country flag.
A shipping info bar with a ships-by date won +11.34% conversion rate.
A shipping deadline bar won +6.62% and +$54,583/month.
Replacing a "Fast Shipping" badge with "Ships by Tomorrow" won +7.40%.
Removing a line that contradicted the offer
Dave removed "Shipping calculated at checkout" from below the ATC on a page that already promised free shipping.
Conversion rate rose +14.49%. The line made shoppers wonder whether a surprise fee was coming.
Free shipping and returns as a USP
Oliver Kenyon added a USP bar with complimentary shipping and returns under Add to Cart on a premium product, worth +$75,600/month.
Dave's country-specific free shipping messaging, tested with a money-back guarantee moved under the ATC, added +$52K/month.
Other formats
Kasper Dolk made shipping and returns benefits in the hero expandable: +€49,938/month at 93.45% confidence, below the usual 95% bar.
Dave's product images that include delivery info, alongside USPs and testimonials, won +7.17% conversion rate.
Losing or flat tests
None of the nine lost. The weakest result statistically is Kasper's, at 93.45% confidence.
Two tests changed more than shipping copy (the guarantee move and the image collage), so their lifts can't be credited to shipping alone.
Untested ideas
- Exact dates: Milos and Dave Diederen suggest an exact delivery date near the buy button. Kasper Dolk suggests testing an exact date against "2-4 days", and an Amazon-style date range.
- Local shipping: Dave suggests a "ships from United States" badge with a flag, and Kasper suggests "we ship to [your country]" with its threshold.
- The "3S" under the CTA: Kasper suggests covering shipping, social proof and safety right under the ATC.
- Replacing vague lines: Milos suggests swapping "shipping calculated at checkout" for a reassurance line.
- Tabs or visible text: Dave suggests moving shipping and returns into expandable tabs, while Kasper suggests keeping them visible. That's a fair head-to-head test.
Placement and design patterns that won
- One or two lines directly under the Add to Cart button.
- A real date ("Ships by Wed, Apr 8") instead of "Fast Shipping".
- A flag or country name that matches the visitor's location.
- No copy that contradicts a free shipping promise.
