12 Best Product Recommendation Apps for Shopify and Beyond

The best Shopify product recommendation app for most businesses is Rebuy if you want recommendations, a smart cart and post-purchase offers in one place, or Wiser and LimeSpot if you want AI recommendations for under $20 a month.

Outside Shopify, Nosto, Clerk.io, Algolia Recommend and Dynamic Yield are the main recommendation engines.

How we picked: we read each vendor's public docs and pricing page, checked Shopify App Store ratings on November 4, 2026, and matched each tool to the tests in our archive. We have not used these tools ourselves.

LiftArchive may earn a commission if you sign up for Rebuy through our links.

Which one is right for you

New Shopify store, under 100 orders a month

Growing Shopify brand

Rebuy if you also want a smart cart and post-purchase offers.

LimeSpot if you want lower cost. Visually if you plan to test every placement.

One clear add-on per product

Frequently Bought Together. A single bundle near add to cart is often all you need.

WooCommerce, Magento or BigCommerce

Clerk.io or Nosto. For WordPress plugins, see our WooCommerce upsell plugins list.

Custom site, SaaS marketplace or app

Algolia Recommend for a developer-led build, Dynamic Yield for an enterprise program. For broader options, see website personalization tools.

What to look for in a product recommendation app

  1. Placements: check it covers the pages that matter to you: product page, cart drawer, checkout, post-purchase, out-of-stock and empty search pages.
  2. Logic you can override: AI picks are fine, but you need rules to exclude items, pin bundles and hide out-of-stock products.
  3. Built-in A/B testing, or compatibility with your testing tool: you need a holdout to know if the widget adds revenue.
  4. Pricing basis: order-based, revenue-based and display-based plans grow very differently as you scale.
  5. Page speed: each widget adds script; check the app's footprint on mobile.
  6. Design control: the widget should match your theme, headings and fonts.
  7. Reporting: look for revenue per visitor and average order value, not just widget clicks.

Real test results

Recommendations often win, but where you place them and how many you show matters as much as the app.

These are from our archive; see more on our product recommendations page.

Watch out for

App stacking. Recommendation, upsell, bundle and cart apps often overlap.

Running two that both inject widgets slows pages and confuses shoppers. Pick one engine and remove the rest.

Distraction near checkout. More offers in the cart can cost orders.

Oliver Kenyon's test that removed a $25 pre-checkout upsell and added trust elements won +$31,000 per month.

Trusting the app's own dashboard. Apps credit themselves for any order that touched a widget.

Run a holdout test with a tool like Intelligems or the options in our Shopify A/B testing apps list.

Discount-led bundles. Bundle discounts lift average order value but can teach shoppers to wait for a deal.

For other options, compare our Shopify upsell apps, bundle apps and post-purchase upsell apps, or browse all CRO tools.

Questions

Does Shopify have built-in product recommendations?

Yes. Shopify's free Search & Discovery app lets you set related and complementary products, and supported themes show them on product pages.

It does not cover the cart drawer, checkout or post-purchase pages.

What is the best free product recommendation app for Shopify?

Shopify Search & Discovery is free for everyone.

Wiser is free up to 50 orders a month, Glood has a free plan with trending and recently viewed widgets, and LimeSpot is free up to 10 orders a month.

What is a product recommendation engine?

It is software that picks which products to show each shopper, based on order history, browsing behavior, rules you set, or a mix.

Apps such as Rebuy, Nosto and Clerk.io put those picks on product, cart, checkout and email.

Do product recommendations increase sales?

Often, but not always. In our archive, cart-page recommendations lifted revenue 43% for a plants brand (Blend Commerce), while a strap cross-sell in a cart drawer lost 10% to 12% revenue (Convertibles). Test placements before rolling them out.

Is Rebuy worth it over cheaper apps?

It can be if you use its smart cart and post-purchase features.

In a Blend Commerce test, Rebuy's recommendations beat Shopify's native ones by 23% in conversion rate, but the test ran only four days.

If you only need a product-page widget, a cheaper app may be enough.
