VWO is worth its price for an online store that already gets enough traffic to finish tests and wants A/B testing, heatmaps and session recordings in one place. If your store has low traffic, or most of your test ideas involve checkout or real price changes on Shopify, a cheaper or Shopify-native tool will usually fit better. VWO no longer lists prices publicly, and buyer data puts a typical annual contract in the five figures.
A note on names: in January 2026 VWO's parent, Wingify, merged with AB Tasty. In September 2026 the combined company relaunched under the Wingify brand, so vwo.com now redirects to wingify.com. We have not used VWO ourselves. This review is based on the vendor docs, public buyer data and what our database of real store tests shows about the kinds of tests stores actually run.
VWO plans and pricing
As of November 2026, the Wingify pricing page lists three tiers for Testing (Growth, Pro and Enterprise) but shows no prices. Each plan has a "Schedule a Demo" button. You get a quote after you talk to sales or create an account.
The best public data on what people pay comes from Vendr, which tracks real software contracts. Its February 2026 data, based on 102 purchases, shows:
- A median contract of $16,330 per year.
- A range from $7,820 to $35,790 per year.
- An entry Starter tier of about $314 per month for up to 10,000 monthly tracked users (MTUs).
- Buyers negotiated an average of 20.28% off.
Pricing scales with MTUs, the modules you add (Testing, Insights, Personalize and others) and contract length. That last point matters for growing stores: a traffic spike from a sale or a viral post can push you into a higher band.
There is a 30-day free trial with no credit card. According to Wingify's help center, the trial includes 10,000 visitors for Testing. That is enough to learn the editor, but not enough to finish a real test on most stores.
VWO used to offer a free Starter plan capped at 50,000 MTUs. Third-party reports in 2026 say new sign-ups now get only the trial, so don't plan around a free tier. Check with sales before you commit.
VWO A/B testing features
VWO Testing covers the three test types most stores need, per Wingify's product pages:
- A/B tests built in a visual editor, so you can change copy, images and layout without code.
- Split URL tests, where each version lives at its own URL. This suits full-page redesigns and theme tests.
- Multivariate tests, which test combinations of headline, image and CTA at once. These need a lot of traffic.
Split URL tests fit the big redesign tests in our database. Kasper Dolk tested a new theme with a BOGO offer against the old theme and saw +44.54% conversion rate, with a 99.7% probability of beating the old theme.
Bayesian stats (SmartStats)
VWO reports results with SmartStats, a Bayesian engine. Instead of a p-value, it tells you the probability that a variation beats control and the likely range of the lift. Many store owners find that easier to act on.
Kasper Dolk reports results the same way. Their test of showing a testimonial versus no testimonial gave +7.22% profit per visitor at a 94.4% probability to beat control. A "94% chance it's better" figure is easy to explain to a founder. But it still means there's about a 1-in-18 chance the variation isn't actually better.
Bayesian reporting does not protect you from calling a test too early. Ruben added a doctor endorsement badge that showed +17% after week one. After four weeks the result was +1.66% CVR, which is flat. Whatever tool you use, set the test length up front with a sample size calculator.
Heatmaps, recordings and surveys
The Insights module (now called Wingify Behavior Analytics) adds heatmaps, session recordings, on-page surveys and form analytics. Insights is priced separately, so ask for it in your quote if you want it.
Having research and testing in one tool helps when you turn what you see into test ideas. Dave Diederen changed the above-the-fold USPs to the points heatmaps showed buyers engaging with and got +6.23% CVR. That is the loop VWO is built for: watch behavior, form a hypothesis, test it.
Flicker and page speed
Like any front-end testing tool, VWO can show a brief flash of the original page before the variation loads. VWO's help article on flicker lists the usual causes: loading the code through a tag manager in async mode, placing it at the bottom of the page, or applying changes with custom JavaScript. Some public reviews also mention flicker on full-page tests. Install the SmartCode in the page head and check your variations on a slow mobile connection before launch.
VWO Shopify setup
On Shopify, you install the Wingify app, add your account ID to turn on the SmartCode, and then switch on event tracking. Per the setup guide, the app sends 15 standard Shopify events, including product views, add-to-cart, checkout started and purchase. The purchase event carries order totals, so revenue goals work out of the box.
The big limit: because of Shopify's security rules, the SmartCode is not placed on the Checkout, Post Purchase or Order Status pages. You can't include those pages in VWO tests.
That matters, because checkout tests in our database swing hard in both directions. Dave Diederen added a countdown timer to checkout and saw +3.16% revenue per visitor. On another store, the same idea lost 7.1% RPV. Kasper Dolk removed a checkout timer and saw CVR +25.61% and RPV +26.18%. If you want to run tests like these, VWO on Shopify is the wrong tool.
The same goes for real price and shipping tests. A front-end script can change what the page shows, but not what Shopify charges at checkout. Dave Diederen's test of shipping price levels, where a $9.49 fee beat the control by +43.81% RPV, needs a tool that changes the actual price. Intelligems is one example.
Who VWO fits (and who it doesn't)
VWO fits:
- Stores with enough steady traffic to finish tests in a few weeks that want to run several tests a month.
- Teams that want testing and behavior research (heatmaps, recordings, surveys) under one contract.
- Brands on Shopify plus other platforms, or on custom builds, that need one tool across sites.
- Agencies and in-house teams that need split URL and multivariate tests and are fine with a sales-led purchase.
VWO is not for:
- Small stores. With low traffic, tests won't finish and a five-figure contract is hard to earn back. Read our guide to testing with low traffic first.
- Shopify stores whose main ideas are checkout, pricing or shipping-fee tests.
- Buyers who want transparent self-serve pricing and month-to-month billing.
- Anyone wary of a product in the middle of a merger and rebrand. Product names, plans and support may keep changing for a while.
Public reviews also mention a learning curve for advanced features and pricing that climbs quickly with traffic.
VWO alternatives
The right alternative depends on why VWO doesn't fit. Here is how the main options compare, based on vendor pages.
| Tool | Pricing (as of November 2026) | Best for | Main downside |
|---|---|---|---|
| VWO (Wingify) | Quote only; Vendr median $16,330/yr | Mid-size and large stores wanting testing plus heatmaps | No public prices; can't test Shopify checkout |
| Convert | Growth from $299/mo billed annually ($399 monthly), 100K tested users | Stores wanting published prices and a privacy-first tool | Extra tested users cost $399 per 100K on Growth |
| Intelligems | See vendor site | Shopify price, shipping and offer tests | Shopify only |
| Optimizely | Quote only | Enterprise teams with developers | Usually more than a typical store needs |
Convert is the closest like-for-like swap. It publishes its prices and offers a 15-day trial with no card, and its pricing page says heatmaps are included on all plans. See our full VWO vs Convert comparison.
For Shopify-only stores, our roundup of Shopify A/B testing apps covers tools that test inside the Shopify stack. If you're weighing enterprise suites, see Optimizely alternatives, or browse every option in our A/B testing tools guide.
