An app icon generator takes one 1024x1024 image and exports every size iOS and Android need, already named and placed in the right folders.
For most apps, a free generator plus Apple's Icon Composer and Android Studio's Image Asset Studio covers the job; a design tool like Figma or Canva only matters for drawing the artwork itself.
The tool you pick affects your workflow, not your installs, so test the icon itself once it ships.
LiftIcon, our free in-browser generator above, turns an image or text into every iOS and Android size as a zip.
Below are the other generators and design tools worth knowing, a sizes table, and what icon tests show.
We haven't used these tools hands-on; the descriptions come from each vendor's public pages.
App icon generators that export every size
These tools start from finished artwork, or simple clipart and text, and give you files ready for Xcode or Android Studio.
| Tool | Input | Output | Price | Not for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Icon Composer | Layered artwork (SVG, PDF, PNG) | Layered icon file for Xcode, Liquid Glass, default, dark and mono variants | Free | Android, or anyone without a Mac on macOS Tahoe 26.4+ |
| Android Studio Image Asset Studio | Image, clip art, text, color | Adaptive and legacy launcher icons, round icons, monochrome layer, 512x512 Play Store icon | Free | iOS, or people who don't use Android Studio |
| IconKitchen | Clipart, text or image | Android, iOS and web icons | Free | Teams that need layered Liquid Glass icons or brand-level design control |
| AppIcon.co | Text prompt (AI) or an existing icon via its resizer | iOS, macOS, watchOS and Android sizes, Xcode-ready asset catalog | Free | Anyone who wants a hand-drawn, brand-specific icon rather than AI output |
| Bakery (Mac) | Emoji and SF-style symbols, colors | Icon sets dragged straight into Xcode | Free with in-app purchases from $1.99 | Android teams, Windows users, polished brand icons |
Apple Icon Composer
Icon Composer is Apple's free tool for building layered icons for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch.
You import foreground layers, set the background, adjust Liquid Glass effects like specular highlights and refraction, and mark how the icon looks in default, dark and mono modes.
It syncs with Xcode through a new icon file type.
The downside: it needs macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later, and it does nothing for Android.
It also isn't a drawing tool, so you still need artwork from somewhere else.
You can skip it and hand Xcode a flat PNG.
Apple's Human Interface Guidelines say the system will then try to split your icon into two layers on its own, and it won't apply Liquid Glass to small details like text and thin lines.
If you want control over the result, use the Icon Composer format.
Android Studio Image Asset Studio
Image Asset Studio is built into Android Studio.
It makes adaptive launcher icons, legacy icons for Android 7.1 and lower, round icons and a 512x512 Play Store preview, and drops them into the right mipmap density folders.
It takes an image, Material clip art or a text string, and has a monochrome layer tab for themed icons.
It's the safest way to get Android icons right, because it previews the circle, squircle and rounded-square masks.
It isn't for iOS, and if you don't already work in Android Studio, setting it up just for icons is a lot of overhead.
IconKitchen
IconKitchen is a free browser tool that grew out of the older Android Asset Studio.
You pick clipart, text or an image, set the shape and background, and download Android, iOS and web icon sets.
It's quick for prototypes, side projects and internal builds.
The limit is design depth. Clipart plus a colored background looks like clipart plus a colored background, so it's a poor fit for a consumer app competing on the store.
AppIcon.co
AppIcon.co now leads with an AI generator: you describe your app and it builds a 1024x1024 master, then exports iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and Android sizes with no account or watermark.
A separate resizer handles icons you already have.
Who it's not for: anyone who needs the icon to match an existing brand system.
AI output can be a starting point, but check it for legibility at small sizes and for anything that looks like another app's mark.
Bakery
Bakery is a Mac app from Good Snooze that builds icons from emoji and symbols, with color and weight controls, and lets you drag the result into Xcode's assets folder.
It's free with in-app purchases from $1.99 to $39.99 as of November 2026, per its App Store listing.
It suits indie iOS developers who need a clean placeholder in a minute.
It's Mac-only, aimed at Apple projects, and symbol-on-color icons won't stand out in a crowded category.
Design tools for the icon artwork
A generator resizes; it doesn't design. If the icon is a real part of your store presence, draw it in a design tool, export a 1024x1024 master (or layers), then run it through a generator.
| Tool | Best for | Price as of November 2026 | Not for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Figma | Vector icon work, templates, team handoff | Starter free; Professional full seat $16/month (pricing) | Non-designers who want a finished icon in minutes |
| Canva | Quick icons from templates and stock graphics | Free; Pro US$144/year; Business US$250/year per person (pricing) | Layered Liquid Glass icons or precise vector control |
Figma
Figma is where most app teams draw icons, because vector shapes stay sharp at every size and you can preview the icon at 40 pixels next to the 1024 master.
Google's Android docs link an Android app icon Figma template with the adaptive icon keylines.
That makes Figma the most practical answer for "app icon template" searches.
The free Starter plan has limited access, and paid seats add up for larger teams.
It also takes real design skill: a template gives you the grid, not the idea.
Canva
Canva offers a free icon maker with templates and stock graphics, which works for founders without a designer.
Some graphics are paid, and Pro costs US$144 a year as of November 2026.
The trade-off is originality. Template icons tend to look like other template icons, and Canva won't produce layered files for Icon Composer.
Treat it as a draft tool, then export a square PNG and resize it with a generator.
App icon sizes for iOS and Android
You need far fewer files than you used to.
Xcode can generate every iOS variant from a single 1024x1024 image, and that's the default for new projects.
You only need the full set if you want custom detail at specific sizes.
| Platform | Master size | What the store or system does | Variants |
|---|---|---|---|
| iOS, iPadOS, macOS | 1024x1024 px, square, layered | System applies the rounded-rectangle mask | Default, dark, clear light, clear dark, tinted light, tinted dark |
| watchOS | 1088x1088 px, square, layered | System applies the circular mask | None |
| visionOS | 1024x1024 px, layered 3D | Circular | None |
| tvOS | 800x480 px, two to five layers | Rounded rectangle with parallax | None |
| Google Play listing | 512x512 px, 32-bit PNG, sRGB, max 1024 KB | Play rounds corners (30% radius) and adds the shadow | None |
| Android launcher (adaptive) | 108x108 dp layers, 66x66 dp safe zone | Device mask: circle, squircle, rounded square | Foreground, background, monochrome (Android 13+) |

If you still ship the full iOS set, AppIcon.co lists 20, 29, 40, 58, 76, 87, 120, 152, 167, 180 and 1024 pixel files, plus Android launcher sizes of 48, 72, 96, 144 and 192 pixels for mdpi through xxxhdpi.
A good generator handles all of these, so you shouldn't be exporting them by hand.
Mistakes generators can't fix
- Pre-rounded corners. Both Apple and Google want square artwork and apply the mask themselves. Rounding it yourself leaves jagged edges or a double curve.
- Baked-in shadows and glows. Google Play adds its own shadow, and Apple's system draws highlights and depth. Your copies will clash with theirs.
- Logos outside the safe zone. On Android, anything outside the inner 66 dp can be clipped by the device mask.
- Text and fine lines. Apple's guidelines warn that text in icons is hard to read at small sizes and doesn't localize. Google bans text that suggests rankings, deals or Play programs.
- Transparency on Play. The Play icon needs a solid background behind any transparent areas.
What app icon tests show
Your icon is the one asset people see in search results, on the product page and on the home screen, so it's worth testing.
Both stores let you do it for free.
- App Store: product page optimization lets you test up to three treatments against your original for up to 90 days. Alternate icons must ship inside your app binary and pass App Review, and people who download from a treatment keep that icon on their device.
- Google Play: store listing experiments test the icon, feature graphic and screenshots, with up to two variants against your current listing.
The best-known public icon test is a warning.
Spiegel Online used Play store listing experiments to swap its traditional black and red icon for a modern monochrome version, and installs fell.
The team put it down to the new icon being too far from the brand people already recognized, according to Google's case study.
A description change in the same program lifted daily installs by 10%.
Our database doesn't have quantified app icon tests yet.
The closest evidence comes from paywall tests, the other place where a visual change decides whether someone converts.
Those tests show the same pattern: visual changes can move results a lot, and in either direction.
- Stardust saw +67% paywall conversion and +12.5% proceeds per user from a video background, according to a vendor-reported Superwall write-up.
- CoinStats reported an average 2.9x conversion on Android and iOS after switching to an animated character paywall. That was a before-and-after change, not a split test.
- Photoroom got +50% upsell screen conversion from localized upsell paywalls (vendor-reported by RevenueCat). Localized icons follow the same logic, and Play's localized experiments let you test them in up to five languages.
- Daily Horoscope saw a +183% trial start rate with paywalls localized by country, as part of a bundled change.
- Not every visual simplification wins. Stardust's yearly-only paywall lost on both conversion and proceeds per user.
What this means for icons: generate a few real alternatives, not tiny tweaks, and test them in the store.
Keep the brand mark recognizable if people already know you, as Spiegel learned.
Change one thing at a time, such as the background color or the symbol, so you know what moved the number.

Icons work together with screenshots, so check the screenshot sizes and screenshot generators too.
