A "how did you hear about us" (HDYHAU) survey asks buyers, right after checkout, which channel brought them to your store.
For most Shopify stores, a dedicated post-purchase survey app is the right tool.
KnoCommerce suits brands that want benchmarks and deep reporting, Fairing suits brands focused on attribution, Zigpoll and Grapevine are the low-cost picks, and stores that already pay for Triple Whale can use the survey built into it.
Below we compare all five using the vendors' own pricing pages and docs, as of November 2026. We have not used these apps ourselves.
We also show how stores in our database turned survey answers into A/B tests that won.
What a "how did you hear about us" survey answers
Pixels and platform dashboards see clicks. They can't see the podcast, the friend's recommendation or the TikTok video someone watched without clicking.
An HDYHAU question fills that gap by asking the buyer directly, which is why these tools are often called attribution surveys or zero-party data tools.
The same survey slot can answer a second question that matters more for conversion work: what nearly stopped people from buying.
Answers like "I wasn't sure it was the official product" or "the timer felt pushy" are ready-made test hypotheses.
So when you pick an app, judge it on two jobs: clean channel data for your ad budget, and open-text answers you can mine for customer research.
The usual flow is research, then a hypothesis, then an A/B test.
| App | Pricing model (as of November 2026) | Entry price | Best for | Not for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KnoCommerce | Tiered by live surveys, questions and features | $19/month (Starter) | Brands that want benchmarks, audiences and trend reports | Small stores that need integrations on a tight budget |
| Fairing | Tiered by monthly orders, plus add-ons | Free up to 200 orders/month | Attribution-first brands with growing order volume | Stores wanting one flat price at high volume |
| Zigpoll | Tiered by monthly responses | Free up to 50 responses/month | Small stores and brands that also survey by email or SMS | High-volume stores that dislike response caps |
| Grapevine | One flat plan | $25/month, unlimited responses | Stores that want predictable cost and many survey types | Teams that need built-in benchmarks |
| Triple Whale survey | Part of Triple Whale, priced by annual GMV | Included with the platform | Stores already using Triple Whale for attribution | Stores that only want a survey |
KnoCommerce
KnoCommerce is a dedicated post-purchase survey app with a strong reporting layer.
Its pricing page lists three plans as of November 2026: Starter at $19/month (one live survey, three questions, no integrations), Analyst at $119/month (two live surveys, unlimited questions, integrations, benchmarking and order attribution reports) and Pro at $299/month (four live surveys, image and video questions, custom audiences).
All plans come with a 7-day free trial and are month-to-month, with a discount for annual billing.
The Shopify App Store listing mentions 30+ templates, conditional logic and targeting on 60+ Shopify attributes.
The downside is the jump from Starter to Analyst.
Starter has no integrations and no audience targeting, so most brands that want survey data in Klaviyo or an attribution tool will land on the $119 plan. Read our KnoCommerce review for more detail.
Fairing
Fairing is built around the HDYHAU question. Its pricing page shows a free plan for 0-200 transactions a month, a Core plan at $49/month for 201-500 transactions, and custom Enterprise pricing above 30,000 transactions, as of November 2026. Core includes templates, follow-up questions, response classification and basic integrations, with a 14-day free trial.
Fairing also sells add-ons: Advanced Attribution, starting at $99/month, adds an adaptive follow-up to every HDYHAU answer, and Data Sync, at $299/month, adds API access and advanced analytics.
The trade-off is that cost scales with your order volume, so a growing store pays more each tier, and the add-ons sit on top.
If you are choosing between the two attribution-focused apps, see KnoCommerce vs Fairing or our Fairing review.
Zigpoll
Zigpoll is a general survey tool that runs on Shopify, priced by responses.
Its pricing page lists a free Lite plan (50 responses/month, unlimited surveys, all question types) and paid tiers from Standard at $39/month (200 responses) up to Premier at $399/month (unlimited responses), billed monthly, as of November 2026. Enterprise is custom.
Every plan includes unlimited surveys and team members, custom styling and API access, and paid tiers add email and SMS survey volume.
That makes Zigpoll a fit if you want to survey customers after delivery, not just on the thank-you page.
The catch is the response cap. A store taking a few thousand orders a month with a decent response rate can climb tiers quickly. See our Zigpoll review.
Grapevine
Grapevine takes the opposite approach to pricing. Its pricing page lists one plan at $25/month as of November 2026, with unlimited surveys and responses, all features and a 14-day free trial.
That one plan covers post-purchase, one-click email, on-site, embedded, Shopify POS, landing page, NPS and CSAT surveys, with integrations including Klaviyo, Shopify Flow, GA4 and Google Sheets.
What you don't get is the benchmarking and attribution reporting depth KnoCommerce and Fairing sell.
Grapevine is a good choice if you mainly want the answers and plan to analyze them yourself.
Triple Whale and Northbeam built-in surveys
Triple Whale includes its own post-purchase survey. Per its help center, the survey runs on the Shopify thank-you page, supports up to 100 custom questions, multiple-choice and open-ended answers, follow-up logic, and targeting by new or returning customers.
Responses feed into Triple Whale's attribution data, which is the main reason to use it.
Triple Whale's pricing page says paid plans are priced by annual GMV and package, on 12-month subscriptions, and there is a free plan.
It doesn't list prices for the survey on its own, so the built-in survey only makes sense if you want the wider analytics platform.
Triple Whale also documents an integration with KnoCommerce for stores that prefer a dedicated survey app.
We earn a commission if you sign up for Triple Whale through our links. Our Triple Whale review covers the platform.
Northbeam is another attribution platform brands pair with survey data.
We couldn't find a built-in post-purchase survey in Northbeam's public documentation, so ask Northbeam directly before you assume one is included.
Questions that feed CRO tests
The attribution question pays for the app. The questions below pay for your next round of tests.
Keep the survey short: one channel question, then one or two of these.
- "What almost stopped you from buying today?" Open text. This surfaces objections you can answer on the product page.
- "What made you choose us over other options?" Gives you reasons to buy, in the customer's words, for headlines and benefit bullets.
- "What did you want to know that you couldn't find?" Points to missing content: sizing, ingredients, shipping times.
- "How did you feel at checkout?" Catches friction such as pushy urgency or surprise costs.
Read the answers in batches, group them into themes, and write one test per theme.
For on-site polls before purchase, our website survey tools guide covers the options, and tools like Lucky Orange tie each survey answer to a session recording.
What the database shows about survey placements
The survey itself lives on the thank-you page, but the tests it inspires run earlier in the funnel.
Our database has five tests tagged with post-purchase surveys as the research source.
They ran on the collection page, the product page and the checkout.
- Collection page. Oliver Kenyon's team added three reassurance lines above the collection grid for a bird food store. All three lines came from post-purchase survey answers, and the result was $44,890/month.
- Product page hero. Kasper Dolk added benefit bullets that answered survey objections such as "is it durable?" and "is it the official X?", worth +$763,679.14 profit/year.
- Checkout. A post-purchase survey told Kasper Dolk that a checkout timer felt like too much pressure to Dutch shoppers. Removing the countdown timer lifted revenue per visitor by 26.18%.
- Product page content. Survey objections like "what if it doesn't work?" led Kasper Dolk to add a "how you'll feel" timeline section to a supplement brand's product pages, with CVR +14% (still being confirmed at the time of posting).
- A flat result. Not every survey-led idea wins. Clean Commit's more visible free-shipping threshold came out at +2.4% conversion, inconclusive.
The pattern is consistent: the winning tests put a real customer's objection, in their own words, where shoppers make the decision.
Any app above can collect those answers. What matters is that someone reads them and turns them into tests.
For upsells and other tests on the thank-you page itself, browse our post-purchase tests.
If you'd rather have someone run that loop for you, from survey to test, Kasper Dolk runs these programs for Shopify brands.
How to choose
- Under 200 orders a month: start on Fairing's free plan or Zigpoll Lite.
- Want flat, predictable cost: Grapevine at $25/month.
- Attribution is the main job and you have the budget: KnoCommerce Analyst or Fairing with Advanced Attribution.
- Already on Triple Whale: try the built-in survey before paying for a second tool.
