Why add-to-cart buttons matter on the product page
The product page button is where a shopper turns interest into an order.
Small changes to what the button says or how it looks get seen by every buyer, which is why button copy and color are among the cheapest tests to run.
Measured results
Copy inside the button
Dave Diederen tested two additions inside the button.
"Add to Cart - Save 50%" won +10.22% conversion rate, +14.41% revenue per visitor, +14.72% profit per visitor and +3.80% AOV.
"60-Day Money-Back Guarantee" inside the button won +7.48% conversion rate and +7.20% revenue per visitor, with no change in AOV.
Dave also reports that plain "Add to Cart" beat creative copy such as "Try Risk Free Today", "Get Yours Now" and "Start Your Journey" every time, but shared no numbers for it.
Button color
Elevate A/B Testing ran pink against green for 14 days on 11,495 visitors.
Pink won: 11.49% vs 10.81% add-to-cart, and 8.9% vs 8.2% reached checkout.
The lesson is less about pink than about checking a color you assume is fine.
Button changes inside wider redesigns
- Oliver Kenyon redesigned the top of the page with clearer CTAs: +$36,772/month.
- Oliver simplified size selection and strengthened the add-to-cart: +$36,240/month and +$0.62 revenue per session.
- Oliver added trust icons, swipeable images and a stronger CTA above the fold: +$27,000/month.
- Milos rebuilt the page with the CTA above the fold: conversion rate 2.1% to 3.2%.
Each changed several things at once, so the button's share of the lift is unknown.
Losing or flat tests
Dave Diederen's price inside the Add to Cart button lost: -1.98% conversion rate, -2.03% revenue per visitor and -1.75% profit per visitor.
Read next to the savings win, the difference seems to be that a saving gives a reason to click and a bare price gives a reason to pause.
Dave's own idea note says to show the price in the button for affordable, impulse or bundle offers and skip it for premium products.
That is a hypothesis to test, not a measured result.
Untested ideas
- Kasper Dolk suggests testing six copy variants that mix the offer and the guarantee, such as "Add to Cart & Save 50%" and "Get 50% Off" with the guarantee.
- Kasper also suggests a contrasting color and font with a subtle pulse, and styling a secondary "Buy Now" as an outlined button.
- Dave Diederen suggests a small offer or benefit label pinned to the top of the button.
- Kasper suggests a sticky add-to-cart bar with review stars, price, discount and the selected variant's image.
- Josh Thompson describes several CTA changes, including plain "Add to Cart" or "Buy Now" copy, but shows no test data.
Placement and design patterns that won
- A short reason to buy after "Add to Cart": the saving or the guarantee.
- Plain action copy over creative copy.
- A button color that stands out, checked by test rather than taste.
- The button visible above the fold, though this only appears inside redesigns.
