Two-image product cards: +20% mobile CR, -12% on desktop

WinnerCollection page

Adding a two-image gallery to each product card on Stone Creek Coffee's collection pages lifted mobile conversion rate by 20% but cut desktop conversion by 12%.

Blend Commerce ran this test for the coffee roaster.

The change shipped on mobile only, and desktop kept its existing hover image.

+20% mobile CR, -12% on desktop
  • Mobile conversion rate: +20%, with revenue per visitor +11% and add-to-cart rate +11%.
  • Mobile estimate: about 89 extra orders a month, per Blend.
  • Desktop conversion rate: -12% and revenue per visitor -7%, a clear loss.
  • Desktop subscription revenue per visitor fell 49%, the largest negative in the test.

Each product card's single image becomes a two-image gallery.

Simplified mockup drawn by LiftArchive from the shared screenshots.

Control

Collection product cards showed one image. Desktop users could hover to see a second, but mobile users had no way to.

Variant

Each card showed a two-image gallery, with pagination dots on mobile and hover controls on desktop.

Why it likely won

Our reading of the result, not the practitioner's claim.

  • On mobile, a second image let shoppers judge a product without opening its page.
  • Desktop already had a hover image, so the new controls added clutter rather than information.
  • Results split by device show why one layout does not always suit both.

Caveats: Results were opposite by device, so the change shipped on mobile only. The source does not share sample size, duration or confidence.

How to run this test on your store

Hypothesis
If we show a two-image gallery on mobile product cards, then more mobile shoppers will buy, because they can see more of the product without leaving the collection page.
Primary metric
Mobile conversion rate
Guardrails
  • Desktop conversion rate
  • Subscription revenue per visitor
  • Product page view rate
Who should test it
Stores where product cards show a single image on mobile and the second image adds real detail, such as packaging or product in use. Test devices separately; if desktop already has hover images, leave desktop alone.

Questions

Do multiple images on product cards help conversion?

On mobile they did here, with conversion up 20%. On desktop the same change lost 12%.

Why would a change win on mobile and lose on desktop?

Devices work differently. Desktop already had a hover image, so the change only helped where shoppers had no way to see a second image.
