Post-purchase accessory upsell: +3% AOV, 15% of orders add it

WinnerBefore/after, not a split testPost-purchase

Cooper's Treats started offering its treat-mold accessory right after checkout, and AOV rose about 3%, with over 15% of orders adding the accessory.

Founder Alex Willen set this up on the brand's own store, and it was published as an Upsell.com (formerly ReConvert) case study.

This was a before-and-after rollout, not a split test.

+3% AOV, 15% of orders add it
  • Over 15% of orders now include the accessory add-on.
  • About 3% lift in average order value.
  • Founder reports first add-ons arrived within a day of launch.
  • No control group, sample size or timeframe was shared.

Control

No offer after purchase. The accessory was not pitched once the order was placed.

Variant

A one-click upsell and thank-you page offer for the treat-mold accessory, shown right after checkout.

Why it likely won

Our reading of the result, not the practitioner's claim.

  • The mold is needed to make the frozen treats at home, so it fits the main product closely.
  • Asking once, right after purchase, avoids cluttering the path to checkout.
  • One-click acceptance removes the need to re-enter payment details.
  • The AOV lift is modest because the accessory is likely cheap compared with the main order.

Caveats: Before-and-after result published by the app vendor, with no control group, sample size or timeframe. The store does five figures a month, so the numbers come from a small business.

How to run this test on your store

Hypothesis
If we offer the product's companion accessory as a one-click upsell after checkout, then AOV will rise because buyers who just committed want to get the most out of what they bought.
Primary metric
Average order value
Guardrails
  • Refund rate
  • Support tickets about duplicate charges
  • Repeat purchase rate
Who should test it
Single-product or small-catalogue stores with one clear accessory. It won't help much if the accessory is already bundled or bought by most customers.

Questions

What is a one-click post-purchase upsell?

An offer shown right after payment that adds an item to the order without re-entering card details. The buyer just clicks to accept.

How much can a single accessory upsell raise AOV?

Here it was about 3%. The lift depends on the accessory's price compared with the main order and how many buyers need it.
