Hover size buttons on collection cards: +17.3% add-to-cart (flat)
Showing clickable size buttons on hover on desktop collection cards raised add-to-cart rate by 17.3%, but revenue moved only 0.27%, so we treat the result as flat.
Clean Commit ran this test for an anonymized Shopify store and published it in its A/B test library.
The agency concluded there was no meaningful overall difference.
- Add-to-cart rate: +17.3%.
- Conversion rate: +6.5%, and orders: +5.2%.
- Average order value: -4.9%, a negative result.
- Revenue: +0.27%, effectively flat, because lower order value cancelled the extra orders.
The change
Desktop cards show clickable size buttons on hover for one-click add to cart.
Simplified mockup drawn by LiftArchive from the shared screenshots.
Control
Desktop product cards on collection pages with no way to add to cart directly.
Variant
Size buttons from XS to XL appeared when shoppers hovered over a desktop product card, and clicking one added that size to the cart.
Why it likely came out this way
Our reading of the result, not the practitioner's claim.
- Quick add removes a page view, so shoppers who already know their size act faster.
- Skipping the product page also skips upsells and extra details, which may explain the lower order value.
- Easy adds can include lower-intent clicks that never become orders.
Caveats: The agency found no meaningful overall difference. It ran on an older page format, and sample size, duration and confidence were not shared. A separate run tested the same idea.

How to run this test on your store
- Hypothesis
- If we show size buttons on hover on collection cards, then conversion rate will rise because shoppers can add to cart without opening each product page.
- Primary metric
- Revenue per visitor
- Guardrails
- Average order value
- Conversion rate
- Who should test it
- Apparel stores with simple sizing and repeat buyers who know their fit. If your product pages sell add-ons or explain fit, quick add may cut order value.
Questions
Does quick add on collection pages increase sales?
It often increases add-to-cart, as it did here (+17.3%).
But order value fell 4.9%, so revenue was close to flat.
Why would quick add lower average order value?
Shoppers skip the product page, where upsells, bundles and extra details usually appear. That can mean smaller baskets.
