Why free shipping thresholds matter in the cart
The cart is where shoppers see what they'll pay for shipping and how close they are to free shipping.
That makes it the place where a threshold changes behaviour: add one more item, or leave.
Measured results
Where to set the threshold
Dave Diederen raised the free shipping threshold to $165, instead of the $100-$125 Dave calls typical.
Profit per visitor rose +6.27%, conversion rate +6.29% and revenue per visitor +5.79%, with AOV flat.
That a higher threshold lifted conversion rate is surprising.
Dave's reading is that the threshold sets an anchor for normal spend, but treat that as one store's result.
How the cart talks about it
Dave changed "Free shipping will be applied at checkout" to "Congrats! You unlocked FREE shipping!".
It won +11.08% conversion rate, +13.93% revenue per visitor, +11.07% profit per visitor and +2.56% AOV. Same offer, clearer and more positive wording.
A second tier after free shipping
Oliver Kenyon added tiered spend rewards, free shipping then bonus items: +$57k/month and +$7.86 revenue per session.
Kasper Dolk's second-threshold mystery gift won a +€30,578 revenue lift on 9,868 visitors at 99% confidence.
Losing or flat tests
None of the four lost, and the only flat metric was AOV in Dave's $165 test.
With so few results, expect threshold changes on your own store to lose sometimes, especially if your AOV sits far below the new bar.
Untested ideas
The 21 ideas fall into four groups:
- Raising the threshold: Elevate A/B Testing and Dave Diederen both suggest a threshold just above your current AOV, since a threshold below AOV pays shipping on orders that would happen anyway.
- Progress bars and milestones: Kasper Dolk, Milos and Dave suggest a visible progress bar, with extra tiers such as a gift or a percentage off after free shipping.
- Upsells near the line: Dave suggests showing upsells when shoppers are close to the threshold, and Kasper suggests cheaper, relevant one-click add-ons.
- Clear costs and reassurance: Dave suggests shipping estimates in the cart rather than at the last checkout step, and Kasper suggests celebrating unlocked rewards, with "FREE" highlighted in green.
Placement and design patterns that won
- A threshold set above typical spend, not below it.
- Positive, specific confirmation once free shipping is unlocked.
- A second reward after free shipping, so the bar keeps pulling.
