Why free gifts matter in the cart
The cart is the last place a shopper can be nudged to add more before checkout.
A free gift that unlocks at a spend level gives a reason to add one more item without cutting the price of everything.
Measured results
Gifts as spend rewards
Kasper Dolk added a mystery gift at a second spend threshold in the cart.
It won a +€30,578 revenue lift on 9,868 visitors at 99% confidence.
The same post reports a separate FAQ test, which is not about gifts.
Oliver Kenyon added tiered spend rewards in the cart, with free shipping and then bonus items: +$57k/month and +$7.86 revenue per session.
Oliver's summary was that tiered rewards beat discounts.
Gift-related upsells
Milos tested a leather strap against a mystery box as the cart drawer upsell on a watch store.
The winner lifted revenue per visitor +15.26%, conversion rate +18.19% and profit per visitor +15.87%, worth +$28,912/month, while AOV fell -2.48%. The listing doesn't say which offer won.
Oliver Kenyon added a "Buying for someone else?" gift wrapping prompt inside the cart: +$58,860/month, with higher AOV and gift wrap attach rate.
Gift wrap is a paid add-on, not a free gift, and Oliver says an earlier version of this test had lost.
Losing or flat tests
No losing tests are listed. The closest thing to a cost is the -2.48% AOV in Milos's upsell test.
Oliver's mention of an earlier losing gift wrap test is a reminder that losses happen and often go unshared.
Untested ideas
Most of the 8 ideas come from Kasper Dolk and repeat the measured pattern:
- A second cart reward after free shipping, such as a mystery gift, gift card or free item, with clear progress.
- A progress bar with milestones, for example free shipping at $40 and a free gift at $60, or $50 and $100 for Q4.
- Free gifts shown with crossed-out original prices, so shoppers see what they are getting, plus a total savings line.
- Dave Diederen suggests keeping the offer visible in the cart, with gifts shown as line items at a crossed-out price.
- Peter Christensen suggests an expiry countdown on the free gift line, such as "Free gift expires in 14m 54s".
Placement and design patterns that won
- The gift unlocks at a spend level, usually as the tier after free shipping.
- A mystery gift rather than a named item, in two of the tests.
- Rewards framed as extra value instead of a discount.
