Recommendations above a collapsed fitment list: +65.16% conversion

WinnerProduct page

Moving product recommendations above a long vehicle fitment list, and folding that list into an accordion, lifted conversion rate by 65.16% on PerTronix product pages.

Blend Commerce ran this A/B/C test for the automotive parts brand.

The result came close to 90% significance, below the usual 95% bar.

+65.16% conversion
  • Conversion rate: +65.16% for the version with both the move and the accordion.
  • Revenue per visitor: +131.35%. Shoppers who bought also spent more.
  • Add-to-cart rate: +12.87%.
  • The version that only moved the widget also beat the control, but by less.
  • Significance was near 90%, so the result is promising rather than settled.

Recommendations move above the fitment list, which collapses into an accordion.

Simplified mockup drawn by LiftArchive from the shared screenshots.

Control

Product pages showed a long Applications section listing compatible vehicles. It pushed the product recommendation widget far down the page, out of view.

Variant

The recommendation widget moved above the Applications section, and the Applications list was collapsed into an accordion. A third version moved the widget without the accordion.

Why it likely won

Our reading of the result, not the practitioner's claim.

  • Scroll maps showed the long fitment list stopped shoppers from finding other products, especially those landing straight on a product page.
  • Removing the list was not an option, because buyers need fitment details to choose the right part. An accordion kept it one tap away.
  • With recommendations in view, shoppers could find related parts and build bigger orders, which fits the large rise in revenue per visitor.

Caveats: The test did not reach 95% significance, and sample size and duration were not shared. The very large lifts may shrink with more traffic.

How to run this test on your store

Hypothesis
If we place product recommendations above long technical content and collapse that content into an accordion, then conversion and revenue per visitor will rise because shoppers can find related products without losing access to key details.
Primary metric
Conversion rate
Guardrails
  • Accordion open rate
  • Return rate for wrong-fit orders
  • Revenue per visitor
Who should test it
Stores with long spec, fitment or compatibility sections, such as auto parts, electronics or tools. If your product pages are already short, there is little to collapse and the effect will likely be small.

Questions

Do accordions hide important product information?

They can, so keep the heading clear and make it easy to open.

Here, the fitment list stayed one tap away and conversions still rose.

Where should product recommendations go on a product page?

Somewhere shoppers will actually see them. If long content pushes them far down, try moving them higher and check scroll maps to confirm they get seen.
