Why bestseller badges matter on the product page
On a product page the shopper has already picked a product, so the badge's job changes.
It reassures them the choice is a good one, or explains why the price is lower today. Both kinds of label tested well here.
Measured results
Best Seller labels (3 tests)
Dave Diederen added a "Best Seller" label directly above the title: +11.59% conversion rate, +12.99% revenue per visitor, +12.87% profit per visitor and +1.25% AOV.
Placement results point both ways. Moving the badge from the image to above the title won +6.05% conversion rate, and +9.04% in a second test.
Yet a badge directly on the hero image also won, +7.04% conversion rate and +7.27% revenue per visitor with no AOV change.
Each was tested against a different control, so the safe reading is that a visible badge helps and the best spot depends on the page.
Named sale badges (2 tests)
Adding the sale's name inside the existing savings badge won both times: "Fall Sale" at +12.94% conversion rate and +11.48% revenue per visitor, and "Summer Sale - Save 50%" at +11.12% conversion rate and +9.99% revenue per visitor.
A named reason makes a discount easier to believe.
Discount badge in a wider redesign (1 test)
Oliver Kenyon moved the discount badge next to the add-to-cart button while also adding a rating under the title, a sticky add-to-cart and clickable thumbnails.
It won +$38,846/month, but the badge's own share is unknown.
Losing or flat tests
None of the six lost. The only costs were small AOV drops on the two named-sale winners (-1.29% and -1.01%).
Expect some product page badge tests on your store to lose; the record here is one practitioner's shared wins.
Untested ideas
Most of the 16 ideas use a label inside the buy box rather than on the image:
- Kasper Dolk suggests "Most Popular", "Best Value" or "Recommended" tags on bundle or option tiles, with the highest-margin option in the middle, and an "89% choose this option" label.
- Kasper Dolk also suggests "Most Popular" on the pricier model in a model switcher.
- Alex Stoykov's earbuds rebuild uses lab and award badges and three price tiers with a "most popular" tag.
- Dave Diederen suggests a small offer label pinned to the top of the add-to-cart button, and "Model is 5'8 wearing a Small" labels in the gallery.
- Ruben suggests a clear "subscribe and save" label with "cancel or pause any time".
- Josh Thompson describes adding "New" badges with a sticky add-to-cart, but shows no test data.
Placement and design patterns that won
- A "Best Seller" label above the title or on the hero image, not hidden lower down.
- Discount badges that name the sale, not just the percentage.
- Short labels: two or three words.
