WinnerCart · 2016-04

Showing a banner about the store's bulk discount right after shoppers added an item to the cart lifted revenue per visitor by 70.5%, from $9.79 to $16.69. Conversion Fanatics ran this test for an ecommerce store selling electronics and accessories.

The numbers are an early read from a test that had not yet finished.

+70.5% revenue per visitor
  • Revenue per visitor: $9.79 to $16.69, a 70.5% lift. Shoppers spent much more per visit.
  • Completed orders: up 60.6%. More shoppers finished checkout, not just bigger baskets.
  • Both numbers come from about 6 days and just over 1,000 visitors per variation, so treat them as early.

The variant adds a bulk discount banner right after add to cart.

Control

Shoppers added a product to the cart and saw no mention of the store's existing discount for ordering 10 or more units.

Variant

Right after adding to cart, shoppers saw a banner confirming the item was added and telling them that adding more would unlock bigger savings.

Why it likely won

Our reading of the result, not the practitioner's claim.

  • The discount already existed, but shoppers did not know about it. The banner made it visible at the moment they were committing to buy.
  • The source notes most buyers already bought more than one unit, so a nudge toward 10 was a small step for many of them.
  • A clear savings message at the cart may also have reassured shoppers on price, which could explain the rise in completed orders.

Caveats: Early read: the test ran 6 days with just over 1,000 unique visitors per variation, and the post says it had not yet concluded. Data is from 2016.

How to run this test on your store

Hypothesis
If we show a banner about our quantity discount right after a shopper adds to cart, then revenue per visitor will rise because shoppers will learn they can save by buying more.
Primary metric
Revenue per visitor
Guardrails
  • Conversion rate
  • Gross margin per order
  • Return rate
Who should test it
Stores that already offer tiered or bulk pricing on items people buy in multiples, like accessories, cables or consumables. It probably won't help if customers only ever need one unit.

Questions

Should I promote quantity discounts in the cart?

If you already offer them, the cart is a natural place to remind shoppers.

In this test, doing so lifted revenue per visitor, though the sample was small.

Will a bulk discount banner lower my margins?

It can, since more orders hit the discount tier.

Track margin per order alongside revenue so a bigger basket does not hide thinner profit.

How long should I run a cart banner test?

Run it for at least one to two full weeks and until you reach a planned sample size.

This test was reported after only 6 days.
