Gift wrap upsell in the cart: $58,860/month forecast
Adding a gift wrap upsell inside the cart produced a forecasted $58,860 per month. Oliver Kenyon built it after survey answers showed customers wanted gift wrap but couldn't find it, and reports higher AOV and gift wrap attach rate.
- Revenue: a forecasted $58,860 per month, or $706,320 per year according to the post. This is a projection, not measured revenue.
- Average order value went up. The size of the lift was not shared.
- Gift wrap attach rate went up. The exact rate was not shared.
- Conversion rate and sample size were not shared.
The change
Variant adds a gift wrap upsell above the cart buttons
Simplified mockup drawn by LiftArchive from the shared screenshots.
Control
The cart drawer showed the product, quantity controls, and Continue Shopping and Go to Checkout buttons. Gift wrap existed on the store but wasn't offered in the cart.
Variant
A "Buying for someone else?" block was added above the buttons, with a gift wrap image, a £6 price and its own Add to Cart button.
Why it likely won
Our reading of the result, not the practitioner's claim.
- customer surveys showed demand that already existed, so the test simply made a wanted option easy to find.
- the cart is where shoppers think about who the order is for, so the question lands at the right moment.
- a low-priced add-on next to an £89 item feels small, so it's easy to say yes.
Caveats: Only forecasted figures were shared, with no percentage lift, sample size or duration. The image label says $58,861 per year while the post says per month. The test ran heading into the gifting season, which may have helped.

How to run this test on your store
- Hypothesis
- If we offer gift wrap with a one-tap add button inside the cart, then more orders will include it, because shoppers buying gifts see it at the moment they're thinking about it.
- Primary metric
- Revenue per visitor
- Guardrails
- Conversion rate
- Checkout click-through from cart
- Fulfilment cost per order
- Who should test it
- Gift-friendly stores, like jewellery or accessories, that already offer gift wrap. It probably won't do much for products people mostly buy for themselves.
Questions
Does a gift wrap upsell increase average order value?
In this test it did. Oliver Kenyon reports a clear lift in AOV and in how many orders included gift wrap.
Where should I offer gift wrapping?
Here it was moved into the cart, just above the checkout buttons. Before that, customers said they couldn't find it.
How should I word a gift wrap offer?
The winning version asked "Buying for someone else?" and showed the gift wrap with its price and an add button.
