What counts as payment icons and express checkout
This collection covers card and wallet logos (Visa, PayPal, Klarna and so on), express checkout buttons such as Shop Pay, PayPal and Apple Pay, buy now pay later, and currency display for international shoppers.
The win/loss record
14 wins, 0 losses. Some of those wins removed payment elements rather than added them, so "it won" doesn't mean "add more icons". Five tests bundled payment changes with other edits.

Biggest wins and their numbers
Icons in the cart and checkout
Dave Diederen added payment icons directly below the cart checkout CTA: +7.37% conversion rate and +7.70% revenue per visitor, AOV unchanged. At checkout, Dave showed card icons under the express checkout buttons: +4.69% conversion rate, +7.81% revenue per visitor and +2.99% AOV. Dave's reasoning is that Shopify's express buttons can leave card payers unsure they can pay normally.
Oliver Kenyon's cart drawer block under the checkout button (dispatch, returns and payment logos, plus a size dropdown) gained +23.8% revenue per visitor and +21.9% conversion rate at 99.4% confidence over 16 days and 200,000+ visitors. Payment icons were one of several changes.
Currency for international shoppers
Dave's geo-detection popup asking international visitors to confirm country and switch currency gained +12.32% conversion rate and +13.01% revenue per visitor. Showing currency codes next to prices gained +5.49% conversion rate.
Buy now, pay later
Dave reports that enabling Shop Pay moved one brand from below 1% to above 1% conversion rate, after page rebuilds had barely moved it. This is a before-and-after observation, not a split test.
Results that point in opposite directions
No test lost, but several conflict, and that's where the useful lessons are.
- Icons under the product page ATC. Dave hid them and won (+9.77% conversion rate, +3.97% AOV), arguing they pull the eye from the button. Dave flags Germany as an exception where payment logos carry trust. Ruben replaced them with customer social proof for +5.25% conversion rate. Oliver Kenyon added icons there while removing the Shop Pay Buy Now button and reported $44,562/month.
- Express buttons on the product page. Milos added Shop Pay, PayPal and Apple Pay under the buy box: +9.26% revenue per visitor and +8.05% conversion rate (+$11,970/month). Oliver's win came from removing the Shop Pay Buy Now button.
The likely difference is the audience and how many buttons compete with Add to Cart. Test both directions.
Bundled tests
Milos's checkout image with social proof, returns and financing reported +$55,000/month. Dave's homepage trust FAQ gained +1.15% revenue per visitor. Oliver's product page fix removed low-performing payment options among other changes (+$36,240/month), and Kasper Dolk's long-form landing page reported +259.7% revenue.
How to change this on Shopify
Express checkout buttons and payment methods are controlled in the Shopify payments settings and the theme's product and cart templates. Icon rows usually sit in the theme's cart or product sections. Currency switching uses Shopify Markets or a geolocation app.
How to test it on your store
- Hypothesis: answering "can I pay my way?" in the cart and checkout reduces hesitation, while extra elements under the product page ATC distract.
- Metric: revenue per visitor and conversion rate; segment by country.
- Idea to try: Kasper Dolk suggests showing Afterpay/Klarna near the price.
