The best app store optimization tools for most subscription apps are AppTweak or MobileAction for keyword research and rank tracking, and the free test tools built into the App Store and Google Play for testing icons and screenshots.
Sensor Tower is for teams that need market intelligence and can sign an enterprise contract.
Paid creative testing platforms like SplitMetrics only make sense once you have more test ideas than the built-in tools can handle.
This roundup covers what each tool does, what it costs as of November 2026, the real downsides, and who each one is not for.
We have not used these tools ourselves. Everything here comes from vendor pricing pages, public docs and the store platforms' own documentation, linked inline.
One limit applies to every tool on this list: ASO tools stop at the install.
The tests in our database show how much revenue is decided after that, on the paywall and in onboarding, so we cover that gap at the end.
Keyword and market tools: AppTweak, Sensor Tower, appfigures, MobileAction
Keyword tools answer three questions: which search terms people use, where your app ranks for them, and what your competitors rank for.
They differ mostly in price, keyword limits and how much market data (downloads, revenue estimates, ad intelligence) comes bundled in.
AppTweak
AppTweak is a dedicated ASO platform covering keyword research, competitor analysis and reporting.
Its pricing page lists four ASO Intelligence plans.
Essential gives you 500 keywords and 6 months of history.
Grow adds organic install metrics and 1,500 keywords.
Expand adds creative intelligence, including screenshot analysis, with 3,000 keywords and 24 months of history. Enterprise is custom.
Downsides: every self-serve plan includes only one seat, so a team that shares the account outgrows it fast.
The creative features sit on the Expand tier, which is several times the cost of Essential.
It is not for a solo developer with one app and a tight budget.
For a deeper look, see our AppTweak review.
Sensor Tower
Sensor Tower is a market intelligence suite more than an ASO tool.
Its pricing page describes app downloads, revenue, active users, retention, ratings, impressions and top advertisers, and says it customizes pricing for each customer. There are no published plans.
In May 2026 Sensor Tower acquired AppMagic and named it the company's offering for small and mid-sized businesses.
That is worth checking if you like Sensor Tower's data but not its contract size.
Downsides: you have to talk to sales to learn the price, and the product is built for analysts and large publishers.
It is not for indie teams that mainly need keyword rankings.
We compare the two leaders in AppTweak vs Sensor Tower.
appfigures
appfigures started as an analytics dashboard for your own app's downloads, revenue and reviews, and added ASO on top.
Its pricing page shows a free plan for up to 5 connected apps with no keyword tracking.
Monitor adds 100 tracked keywords with daily rank updates.
The full ASO tools, with hourly keyword updates and keyword suggestions, start on the Optimize plan with 500 keywords.
Downsides: competitor tracking only appears on the Boost plan and above, and the jump from Optimize to Boost is large.
It is not for teams whose main job is competitive research across many rivals.
It suits small teams that want their own app's sales, reviews and rankings in one place.
MobileAction
MobileAction pairs ASO intelligence with Apple Ads tools.
Its pricing page lists Lite (100 keywords, 5 apps), Basic (500 keywords, 8 apps) and Pro (1,500 keywords, 10 apps, 3 seats), each with a 7-day free trial.
Its Apple Ads campaign manager has a free tier for up to $10,000 in monthly ad spend.
Downsides: the Lite plan keeps only 3 months of history, which is short for seeing seasonal patterns.
Ad intelligence and custom product page intelligence are priced separately on request.
It is not for teams that want a single, all-inclusive price.
App Radar (by SplitMetrics)
App Radar is SplitMetrics' ASO tool, priced in euros.
Its pricing page lists Essentials (2 apps, 500 keywords, 25 competitors), Growth (10 apps, 1,500 keywords, 2 seats) and Scale (15 apps, 3,000 keywords, 5 seats), with a 7-day trial that needs a credit card.
The low app limit on Essentials makes it a poor fit for studios with a large portfolio.
Creative testing: SplitMetrics and Storemaven
Keyword tools get you seen. Creative testing decides whether people tap Get once they land on your page.
The app store conversion rate benchmarks show how wide the gap between apps can be, and most of it comes down to the icon, screenshots and preview video.
SplitMetrics Optimize
SplitMetrics Optimize is a paid A/B testing platform for App Store and Google Play pages.
Its pricing page lists support for 15+ languages and 50 behavioral metrics, and pitches testing app ideas before launch.
Pricing is not published; you request a demo.
The main reason to pay for it over the free store tools is flexibility: more variants, pre-launch tests and behavior data beyond install rate.
Ask how test traffic is sourced and what it costs, since that can add to the bill.
It is not for apps that have not yet maxed out Apple's and Google's free tests. See our SplitMetrics review.
Storemaven
Storemaven built one of the first app store testing platforms and was acquired by Zynga in September 2022. As of November 2026, the storemaven.com domain no longer hosts the product, and we could not find a current public product or pricing page.
If it is on your shortlist, confirm with the vendor that it is still sold to outside companies before you plan around it.
Free ASO tools
You can do a lot without paying anything.
The two stores and Apple Ads give you the most reliable data there is, because it comes from the stores themselves.
- Apple Product Page Optimization. Test up to 3 alternate treatments of your icon, screenshots and app preview video against your original page, for up to 90 days, with results in App Store Connect. One test runs at a time, and alternate icons must ship in the app binary (Apple docs).
- Google Play store listing experiments. Test icons, feature graphics, screenshots and descriptions with up to 2 variants per experiment. You can run one default graphics experiment or up to five localized experiments at once (Play Console Help).
- Apple Ads keyword data. Apple Ads shows Search Popularity for keywords on a 1 to 5 scale, plus keyword recommendations based on searches for apps like yours (Apple Ads Help). It is the closest thing to first-party keyword volume for the App Store.
- Free tiers. The appfigures free plan tracks your own apps' downloads, revenue and reviews, and MobileAction's Apple Ads manager is free up to $10,000 in monthly spend.
The catch with the free store tests is speed.
Small apps can wait weeks for a result, and both stores limit how many tests run at once.
Our store listing tests page and the ASO checklist help you pick which tests deserve those slots.

Which ASO tool to pick
- Solo developer or first app: start with Apple Ads keyword data, the free store experiments and MobileAction Lite or appfigures Monitor for rank tracking.
- Small team with a few apps: AppTweak Essential, MobileAction Basic or App Radar Essentials. Pick based on seats and how many apps you track.
- Growth team that ships creative often: AppTweak Expand for creative intelligence, plus a paid testing platform once the free tests become the bottleneck.
- Publisher or analyst team: Sensor Tower, or ask about AppMagic if the enterprise contract is too big.
- No time to run it yourself: compare ASO agencies, which often bring their own tool licenses.
What ASO tools can't tell you
Every tool above measures the store page. None of them sees what happens after the install, which is where a subscription app earns its money.
The tests in our database show the same ideas that work in store creative also move paywall numbers.
Localization is a good example. Daily Horoscope saw a +183% trial start rate with paywalls localized by country, though it was a bundled change and the result is vendor-reported by Superwall.
Photoroom reported +50% upsell screen conversion from localized upsell paywalls in an A/B test.
Video works after the install too. Stardust got +67% paywall conversion and +12.5% proceeds per user from a video background paywall, and FitnessAI reported about +80% revenue after adding video to its paywall, a before-and-after comparison rather than a controlled test.
Previewing the product helps as well, just as screenshots do on the store page.
Clear 30 went from 20% to 30% conversion with a paywall that previews the program, and Unchaind saw over +50% conversion with a paywall that previews premium features.
So budget for both sides. Use ASO tools to win the install, then test the first screens with an app A/B testing tool and the ideas on our paywall pages.
