For most people, the best paid conversion rate optimization course is CXL's Conversion Optimization Minidegree: 20 courses, about 58 hours of video, and a certificate. If you run a store and can't justify the cost, start with Udacity's free A/B Testing course from Google and the free Google Analytics certification, then learn from real test results. A certificate matters less than knowing why tests win or lose.
This page compares the options using vendor pages and public reviews. We have not taken these courses ourselves. Prices are as of November 2026.

CXL: the most complete paid CRO course
CXL was founded by Peep Laja and is the name most CRO practitioners mention first. Its Conversion Optimization Minidegree has 20 courses and 58 hours 28 minutes of video, plus assignments and a final exam. CXL describes it as an advanced curriculum covering research, testing, statistics, psychology and program management.
What CXL costs
As of November 2026, you can buy the Minidegree on its own for $999, or get it through an All-Access plan. According to CXL's pricing page, plans cost $289 per month, $549 per quarter, or $1,599 per year.
The annual plan includes live courses, while the monthly plan covers on-demand courses only. The 7-day money-back guarantee applies only to the annual plan, so monthly and quarterly buyers can't get a refund. Team plans run $7,500 per year, per CXL's help center.
What public reviews say
On G2, reviewers mostly praise how good and how thorough the content is, and the instructors' practical experience. The common complaints are cost, the time it takes, and pacing that some beginners find hard.
Two more downsides are worth knowing:
- The focus has moved. CXL's about page now pitches AI and conversion training for B2B marketers. A lot of the catalog is not about ecommerce.
- The ranking you'll find is CXL's own. CXL's list of the best CRO courses lives on CXL's own blog, so treat it as marketing.
Who CXL is for, and who it isn't
CXL suits people who want to work in CRO, in-house marketers who will run tests every week, and agency staff who need a credential to show clients. Studying a few hours a week for a few months is realistic.
It is not for a store owner doing under a few thousand orders a month who wants quick wins. Most of what you'd learn assumes you have enough traffic to test. For that reader, $999 is better spent on research or on hiring a practitioner for an audit.
A paid alternative for ecommerce UX: Baymard
If your problem is page design rather than test statistics, Baymard's UX Certification is built on its ecommerce usability research. It has three levels (40, 80 and 120 hours), and you must pass six exams on topics such as product pages and cart and checkout. As of November 2026, Baymard lists $2,388 for its Premium research platform plus 5 certification seats. That price makes sense for a team, not one person.
Free CRO courses worth your time
You can learn the basics of conversion rate optimization without paying anything. These free options cover the two skills every course teaches: reading data and running a clean test.
Udacity: A/B Testing by Google
The free A/B Testing course on Udacity is taught by Google staff, including Diane Tang and Carrie Grimes. Its five lessons cover the basics, ethics, choosing metrics, designing an experiment and analyzing results. Udacity lists it as beginner level, last updated May 2025.
It is the best free course on test statistics. It is not about ecommerce, so you won't get page ideas from it.
Google Analytics Certification on Skillshop
You can't optimize what you can't measure. Google's free Analytics Academy on Skillshop teaches GA4, and the exam is free too. Per Skillshop's help pages, certifications last one year. Most exams need a score of 80% or higher, and you can retry after 24 hours with no limit on attempts.
Courses from testing tool vendors
Testing tools teach CRO to win customers. Convert offers a free interactive A/B testing course that comes with a 15-day trial and doesn't need a credit card. Convert's Pro and Enterprise users also get one free seat in Ruben de Boer's "The Complete Conversion Rate Optimization Course" on Udemy, according to Convert's partner page.
The downside of vendor courses is clear: they teach on their own product. That's fine if you plan to use it anyway.
Tools mentioned here
You only need one A/B testing tool to copy this result. Here's where we'd start.
Some of these are affiliate links. We only list tools practitioners actually use to run tests like these.
CXL Lite
CXL also has a free tier. CXL Lite gives you webinars, free lessons and trial courses after you sign up. It's a cheap way to see whether CXL's teaching style suits you before paying $999.
Free real-world results
Courses teach method. They rarely show what happens on a real store. Our database of ecommerce A/B tests is free and lists 285 results from named practitioners, losses included. Reading 50 of them teaches you more about what shoppers respond to than most course modules.
What to learn first
Whatever course you pick, learn things in this order. Each step depends on the one before it.
1. Statistics, so you don't fool yourself
Most bad CRO decisions come from calling a test too early. Ruben saw this with an authority badge test: it showed +17% after week 1, but that was noise, and it ended flat at +1.66% CVR after 4 weeks.
Learn statistical significance and how long to run a test before anything else. Then use a sample size calculator before every test.
2. Context beats best practices
Courses teach patterns. Real tests show that those patterns depend on context. Countdown timers are the clearest example in our database:
- Dave Diederen saw +3.16% revenue per visitor after adding a countdown timer to checkout.
- Dave Diederen ran the same idea on another store and lost 7.1% RPV.
- Kasper Dolk went the other way and removed a checkout countdown timer, which lifted CVR by 25.61% and RPV by 26.18%, an estimated +€150k/month.
Same element, three different results. That is the main lesson no certificate can give you: test it on your own store.

3. Customer research, so your ideas are better
Good tests start from what customers tell you, not from a list of tactics. Oliver Kenyon added three reassurance lines taken from survey answers above a collection page grid, worth $44,890/month. Our guide to customer research covers surveys, reviews and session recordings.
4. Offers and pricing, carefully
Offer tests have the biggest swings in both directions. Milos changed a 2-pack offer to "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" at the same price and saw -52.38% RPV, a loss of about $104,679/month. Losses like this are why you test offers instead of just launching them.
5. Then the full process
Once you can measure, research and run a clean test, learn how to run a program: writing hypotheses, prioritizing, and keeping a record of results. Our CRO guide and A/B testing guide walk through it, and this is where a course like CXL's program management track adds the most.
A simple plan for store owners
If you run a store and want a free path, this order works for most people:
- Week 1: Take the Google Analytics modules on Skillshop and set up the reports you'll check every week: conversion rate, revenue per visitor and average order value.
- Weeks 2-3: Work through Udacity's A/B Testing course. Focus on the metrics and analysis lessons.
- Week 4: Read 30-50 tests in our database for the pages you plan to change, and note which ideas lost as well as which won.
- After that: Run one test at a time, sized with a calculator, and write down what you learned from each one.
If that habit sticks and you want to go deeper, that's the point where a paid course like CXL is worth the money.
If you'd rather have someone experienced run tests while you learn, Dave Diederen shares most of their results in public and works with Shopify stores.

Questions
What is the best conversion rate optimization course?
For depth, CXL's Conversion Optimization Minidegree is the most complete: 20 courses, about 58 hours, with a final exam and certificate. For a free start, take Udacity's A/B Testing course by Google and the Google Analytics certification on Skillshop.
Is there a free CRO course?
Yes. Udacity's A/B Testing course by Google is free, Google's Analytics Academy and certification exam on Skillshop are free, and Convert offers a free interactive A/B testing course with a 15-day trial. CXL also has free content through CXL Lite.
Is a conversion rate optimization certification worth it?
It helps if you want a CRO job or need a credential for clients. Store owners usually get more from learning statistics, doing customer research and studying real test results than from a certificate.
Is CXL worth the money?
Public reviews praise CXL's content quality and instructors, but cost, time and pacing are common complaints. As of November 2026 the Minidegree is $999 on its own, and the 7-day refund applies only to the annual plan. It suits CRO professionals more than small store owners.
How long does it take to learn CRO?
CXL's Minidegree alone has about 58 hours of video. You can learn the basics of test statistics and analytics in a few weeks with free courses. Building judgment takes running tests and studying results over months.
