Announcement Bar A/B Tests: What 10 Results Show

All 10 measured announcement bar tests in this archive were recorded as wins. The pattern: a bar that is clickable, names one offer and links straight to it beat a bar of passive text.

Dave Diederen's Shop Now CTA in the announcement bar gave +14.46% conversion rate and +15.44% revenue per visitor. Oliver Kenyon made the bar clickable and linked it to high-ticket bundles for +$74,000/month.

One win came from removing a bar: Dave hid a scrolling marquee bar and gained +2.10% conversion rate. The grid below lists every result and idea.

What counts as an announcement bar

This collection covers the thin strip above or below the header: promo bars, countdown bars, free-shipping callouts, scrolling marquees and review strips under the navbar. Dave Diederen ran 7 of the 10 tests and Oliver Kenyon ran 3.

The win/loss record

10 results, 10 marked won, 0 losses. One of the wins was a removal, and one was a head-to-head between two bar messages, so the record does not mean any bar beats no bar.

Biggest wins and their numbers

Make it clickable and point it at one offer

Dave's Shop Now CTA test is the cleanest result: +14.46% CVR, +15.44% RPV, AOV unchanged. Dave also upgraded a generic bar with a clear offer, a countdown and a link for +$170K additional revenue, and made the bar clickable with a sale countdown for +4.32% RPV.

Oliver Kenyon's three tests followed the same idea with different destinations: high-ticket bundles (+$74,000/month), the clearance page (+$57,000/month) and a best-sellers collection behind a free-shipping message (+$45,225/month). Oliver says heatmaps showed shoppers already trying to click the bar.

Urgency beat a free-gift callout

In a head-to-head, Dave found a countdown timer bar beat a free-gift threshold bar: +1.59% CVR, +2.82% RPV, +3.26% profit per visitor. Dave's view is that a free gift means more next to the Add to Cart button, once the shopper is considering the product.

Having a bar at all

Dave's plain added an announcement bar test gave +5.41% CVR and +5.92% RPV. A scrolling strip of review snippets below the navbar added +2.73% CVR.

Tests that lost or were flat

No losses were shared. The closest thing to a warning is the marquee result: hiding a scrolling bar won +2.10% CVR and +$30,500/month. Filler text that moves takes attention and space without giving shoppers a next step.

Design patterns that won

  • One static message, not rotating slides.
  • A specific offer with a real number, such as a discount or a free-shipping threshold.
  • A visible CTA such as Shop Now, not just a hidden link.
  • A countdown during genuine sales.
  • A link to one destination: a bundle, a best seller, or the sale collection.

Ideas not yet tested

Kasper Dolk suggests moving the bar below the navbar, where shoppers are more likely to read it, and putting a free-shipping progress bar in it. Dave Diederen suggests linking to the best-selling product page rather than a collection, and using the bar to say which countries you ship to.

How to add or change announcement bars on Shopify

Most themes include an announcement bar section with a link field in the theme editor header settings. Countdowns usually need an app; see the countdown timer apps. Check on mobile that the CTA text is not truncated.

How to test it on your store

Hypothesis: a clickable bar naming your best offer and linking straight to it will raise revenue per visitor against your current text bar. Measure revenue per visitor, not bar clicks, and size the test with the sample size calculator.
