For most Shopify stores, start with Hotjar (now sold as Contentsquare) because its free plan covers heatmaps, session replays and basic surveys, so you can learn what you need before paying. Choose Crazy Egg if you want simple click and scroll reports plus a built-in A/B testing tool in one bill, and you are fine paying from day one.
The bigger question is what you do with the heatmap afterward. Below we compare features and price using vendor docs, then show real tests from our database that started with a heatmap, a scroll map or a survey.
A note on method: we have not used either tool ourselves. Everything here comes from the vendors' own pages and public information, with links so you can check.
Features: what each tool actually gives a store
Both tools answer the same first question: where do shoppers click, how far do they scroll, and where do they get stuck? They differ in how they show it and what they bundle around it.
Crazy Egg
Crazy Egg is built around heatmap reports. Its heatmaps page lists five views:
- Click map: which parts of a page get the most clicks.
- Scroll map: how far visitors scroll and which content they never see.
- Confetti map: individual clicks, color-coded by segment such as traffic source.
- Overlay map: click numbers for each element on the page.
- List map: a plain table of clicks per element.
According to its pricing page, every plan also includes session recordings, surveys, A/B testing, error tracking and traffic analysis, plus unlimited domains and team members. Installation on Shopify and WordPress works through integrations rather than pasting code by hand.
The A/B testing is the main difference from Hotjar. Crazy Egg lets you run simple split tests in the same tool, and from the Plus plan up it unlocks unlimited A/B tests with device targeting. For a small store that wants one tool, that matters.
The downside: recordings are capped tightly on lower plans. The Starter plan allows 50 recordings a month, which is a thin sample if you want to watch how mobile shoppers use a product page.
Hotjar (now part of Contentsquare)
Hotjar merged into the Contentsquare Group on July 1, 2025, according to Hotjar's help center. Existing accounts keep working, but Contentsquare says new users can no longer sign up for Hotjar as a separate product. You get the same tools inside Contentsquare instead.
Contentsquare describes its free plan as the "classic Hotjar" experience: heatmaps, session replays, surveys and feedback. Its pricing page lists session replays, heatmaps, funnels, surveys and error monitoring on every plan. Paid plans add zone-based heatmaps, journey analysis, AI summaries of replays and 13 months of data.
Surveys are where Hotjar has always been strongest, and that still holds. Asking shoppers "What almost stopped you from buying?" often tells you more than a click map does. Note that surveys are now priced as their own product line (Voice of Customer), separate from heatmaps and replays.
The downsides: Hotjar has no built-in way to build and run an A/B test on the Free or Growth plans, so you need a separate testing tool. The move into Contentsquare also means plan names, billing entities and limits have changed, which can be confusing if you are reading older reviews.

What stores in our database did with heatmap data
Either tool will show you a hot spot. The value comes from testing a change there. These results from our database all started with behavior data.
Dave Diederen saw a +20% conversion rate after adding a countdown timer where heatmaps showed shoppers were focused on a collection page. In a related test, Dave turned a collection banner that drew attention into a clickable countdown timer and reported +$161K in revenue.
Click data can also guide copy. Dave changed above-the-fold USPs to the points heatmaps showed buyers engaging with and saw +6.23% CVR on a product page. Another of Dave's tests moved the most-clicked category to the first homepage tab and reported +14.17% CVR.
Scroll maps work the same way. Peter Christensen rearranged homepage sections based on scroll maps, putting the most compelling content higher, and saw +12.64% CVR. Both tools include scroll maps, so this kind of test is open to you with either one.
Surveys, Hotjar's strong suit, feed tests too. Oliver Kenyon added three survey-based reassurance lines above a collection page grid and reported $44,890/month. Kasper Dolk added hero benefit bullets that answered survey objections, worth $763,679.14 extra profit per year.
Price: what you pay as of November 2026
The pricing models are different. Crazy Egg charges by tracked pageviews and has no free plan. Contentsquare (Hotjar) charges by monthly sessions and has a free tier.
Crazy Egg pricing
As of November 2026, Crazy Egg's pricing page lists four plans. Prices are per month, billed annually, and the page says there are no overage charges. A 30-day free trial is offered.
| Plan | Price (billed annually) | Tracked pageviews/month | Heatmaps | Recordings/month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $29/month ($348/year) | 5,000 | 5 | 50 |
| Plus | $99/month ($1,188/year) | 150,000 | 75 | 1,000 |
| Pro | $249/month ($2,988/year) | 500,000 | 100 | 5,000 |
| Enterprise | $599/month ($7,188/year) | 1,000,000 | 200 | 10,000 |
For most stores, Starter is too small. Five thousand pageviews can be used up in a few days on a store getting steady ad traffic. Plus is the realistic entry point, and it is also the plan where unlimited A/B testing begins.
Hotjar / Contentsquare pricing
As of November 2026, Contentsquare's pricing page lists these plans for the heatmaps and replay product:
- Free: $0, up to 200k monthly sessions, one project, one month of data access.
- Growth: from $49/month, or $39/month billed annually, with session tiers from 7k to 240k+ a month, three projects and 13 months of data.
- Pro and Enterprise: custom pricing, from 1 million sessions.
Surveys beyond the basics are a separate Voice of Customer product. Its Growth tier starts from $79/month, and the free tier includes 100 responses. If you want both heatmaps and full surveys, add both prices together.
Existing Hotjar customers being moved to Contentsquare may see different rates, so check your migration notice rather than relying on the public table.
Price comparison in practice
A store that only needs to look at click and scroll data for a few key pages can do that for free with Contentsquare. The one-month data window is the main catch: you need to review the data regularly or lose it.
A store that wants heatmaps, recordings and simple split tests in one place pays $99/month on Crazy Egg Plus. On Contentsquare, you would pay for Growth plus a separate testing tool. Our A/B testing tools guide covers those options.
Verdict: which one fits your store?
Neither tool will raise your conversion rate on its own. They tell you where to look. The tests above worked because someone turned a hot spot into a hypothesis and then tested it.
Pick Hotjar (Contentsquare) if
- You want to start free and only pay once you know what you need.
- On-site surveys and feedback are a big part of your research.
- You already have, or plan to buy, a separate A/B testing tool.
Not for: stores that want one simple tool with testing built in, or teams that need data kept longer than a month without paying.
Pick Crazy Egg if
- You want click, scroll and confetti reports that are easy to read.
- You want simple A/B tests in the same tool as your heatmaps.
- You prefer a fixed annual bill with no overage charges.
Not for: stores on a tight budget (there is no free plan and billing is annual), or teams that need deep survey programs or many recordings on lower plans.
