Why social proof matters on the homepage
The homepage hero is often the first thing a new visitor sees.
Ratings, press logos and customer counts compete there with the headline and product for a few seconds of attention, so what you put first matters.
Measured results
Proof as part of a clearer hero
Oliver Kenyon ran two hero tests. One added better imagery, "Rated 4.9/5 by Thousands", recognition logos and a clearer headline: +$78,454/month and +$1.54 revenue per session.
The other added a USP toolbar, three benefit bullets and a full-width CTA backed by social proof: +$77,558/month and +$0.58 revenue per session.
Dave Diederen tested 4 hero banner variations covering social proof position, trust badges, delivery and guarantee benefits and CTA hierarchy.
The winner lifted conversion rate +15.52% and profit per visitor +14.29%. Dave didn't say which change drove it.
Taking proof away
Dave hid an "As Seen On" press bar (Glamour, Women's Health, InStyle, ELLE) for paid traffic.
Conversion rate rose +3.55%, revenue per visitor +2.61% and profit per visitor +2.45%, with AOV unchanged.
Losing or flat tests
No test was logged as a loss, but Dave's press bar test is a loss for that piece of proof.
Dave's reading is that paid visitors who just clicked an ad haven't formed an objection yet, so press logos high on the page took space from the product.
Dave stresses that press logos aren't bad in general.
The three hero tests each changed several things, so they don't show that social proof alone caused the lift.
Untested ideas
- Reviews: Dave Diederen suggests adding a review slider to the homepage.
- Proof in the hero: Kasper Dolk suggests instant social proof in the hero next to a value proposition and product-in-use image, with benefits under the hero.
- Faces and hierarchy: Kasper suggests human faces, a model looking at the text and a clear visual hierarchy.
- Offer first: Dave suggests a single static hero with a BOGO-style offer instead of a carousel.
Placement and design patterns that won
- A short rating line ("Rated 4.9/5") inside the hero, next to a clear headline and CTA.
- Proof sitting near the CTA rather than taking the top slot on its own.
- For paid traffic, product content first and press logos lower or hidden.
