USP Bar & Benefit Icon A/B Tests: What 26 Results Show

All 26 measured USP bar and benefit icon tests in this archive were recorded as wins, but they point in two directions.

Specific, customer-led USPs placed at the point of purchase won, and in four tests hiding or demoting a generic USP bar was the winning change.

Dave Diederen hid the USP badge bar above the fold on a product page and gained +5.65% conversion rate and +8.75% revenue per visitor (+A$59,000/month).

Dave also added 3 USPs below the Pay Now button at checkout for +9.90% conversion rate. Placement and specificity decided the outcome.

The analysis below groups the results by page and pattern. The grid lists every result and idea.

What counts as a USP bar

This collection covers rows of benefit icons, short USP checklists, scrolling marquee bars, trust bars under the header, and benefit bullets in the product hero.

Some tests changed USPs as part of a bigger redesign, which makes the USP's own effect hard to isolate.

The win/loss record

26 results, 25 marked won and 1 reported only as revenue (a trust-builder USP above the fold, +$32,003/month, Oliver Kenyon).

No losses were recorded. The more useful fact is that four of the wins came from removing or moving USPs, so "add a USP bar" is not a safe default.

Where USP bars were tested

  • Product page: 12
  • Checkout: 4
  • Site-wide: 3
  • Homepage: 2
  • Cart, collection page, landing page, navigation, other: 1 each

When removing USPs won

Dave Diederen ran all four of these:

In each case the USPs took space from something shoppers wanted more, such as the product, the story or the reviews.

Biggest wins from adding or improving USPs

At checkout and under Add to Cart

Dave's 3 trust USPs in the checkout banner and below the CTA gave +20% checkout conversion rate.

Peter Christensen's customer count plus 3 USP icons at checkout moved checkout conversion from 69% to 76%, though the test was still running when shared.

Oliver Kenyon's free shipping and returns USP bar under Add to Cart added +$75,600 per month, and four customer-led USP icons under the cart checkout button added +$21,516 per month.

Format and content

Results to read with care

Kasper Dolk's checkout blocks with USPs, reviews and an upsell compared month to date against a previous period (+24% conversion rate), not a split test.

Ruben's trust bar below the navigation (+55% conversions) has no supporting metrics.

Design patterns that won

  • Three or four USPs, not eight.
  • Icons in a compact grid beat plain text lists.
  • Content sourced from surveys or heatmaps.
  • Placed under Add to Cart, the cart button or Pay Now, not stacked above the product.

How to add or change USP bars on Shopify

Most themes have an icon-with-text or multicolumn block you can place under the buy buttons in the product template.

Checkout USPs need Shopify Plus checkout extensibility or a checkout app.

Before adding, check whether your theme already shows a USP bar above the fold that might be worth testing without.

How to test it on your store

Hypothesis: naming the 3 reasons buyers hesitate, right under Add to Cart, will raise revenue per visitor.

Also test the reverse: hide the existing bar above the fold.

Use revenue per visitor as the main metric and size the test with the sample size calculator.

Questions

Do USP bars increase conversions?

All 26 tests here were recorded as wins, but four of them won by hiding or moving USPs.

Specific USPs near Add to Cart or Pay Now won, such as Dave Diederen's +9.90% conversion rate at checkout, while a generic bar above the fold sometimes did better removed.

Where should USP icons go on a product page?

Under the Add to Cart button was the most consistent winner, as in Oliver Kenyon's free shipping and returns bar (+$75,600/month).

Above the fold, Dave Diederen saw +5.65% conversion rate from hiding the badge bar.

How many USPs should I show?

The winning tests used three or four. Dave Diederen's compact two-column grid with an icon per benefit gained +14.36% revenue per visitor, and the 3 horizontal icon value props added +$465,060 yearly profit.
