Checkbox upsell in Shopify Plus checkout: 50% take rate
A checkbox upsell in the Shopify Plus checkout was taken on about 50% of orders for fashion clients. Kasper Dolk shared this from stores that added it. The example shown offers shipping insurance for 3.95 euros.
- About 50% of orders included the add-on. Half of buyers paid extra at checkout.
- No effect on conversion rate, order value or revenue per visitor was shared.
The change
A checkbox for shipping insurance sits just above the payment section.
Simplified mockup drawn by LiftArchive from the shared screenshots.
Control
Checkout had no add-on offer between the delivery and payment steps.
Variant
A checkbox offered shipping insurance against damage, loss and theft for 3.95 euros, placed just above the payment section. In the screenshot the box is already ticked.
Why it likely won
Our reading of the result, not the practitioner's claim.
- a single tick box is the lowest-effort upsell possible, so it adds no real friction.
- insurance plays on worry about lost parcels right when the shopper is committing.
- the box appears pre-ticked, which likely drives much of the take rate since shoppers must opt out.
Caveats: This is an observed take rate, not an A/B test, so the effect on checkout completion is unknown. A pre-ticked paid add-on is restricted in the EU and some other markets, so check local rules.

How to run this test on your store
- Hypothesis
- If we add a checkbox upsell for shipping insurance above payment, then revenue per order will rise because buyers can add protection in one click.
- Primary metric
- Revenue per visitor
- Guardrails
- Checkout conversion rate
- Refund and chargeback rate
- Customer complaints about add-on charges
- Who should test it
- Shopify Plus stores selling parcels that can get lost or damaged, such as fashion. Test an unticked box first if you sell in the EU, where pre-ticked paid extras are not allowed.
Questions
What is a checkbox upsell?
It is an add-on the shopper accepts by ticking one box at checkout. In this example it was shipping insurance for 3.95 euros.
What take rate can a checkout upsell get?
Fashion stores here saw about half of orders take it. The box was shown pre-ticked, which likely raised the rate.
Can I pre-tick an upsell checkbox?
Many regions, including the EU, ban pre-ticked boxes for paid extras. Check your markets before launching one.
