For most Shopify stores, the best cart abandonment software is Omnisend or Klaviyo: both connect to Shopify in minutes, ship with prebuilt abandoned cart flows, and can add SMS on top of email. If you send fewer than about 10,000 emails a month and only need a basic reminder, Shopify's built-in automations cost nothing extra. Add a dedicated SMS tool like Postscript only once your email flows are working.
Recovery tools matter because most carts never convert. Baymard Institute's average of 50 studies puts the documented cart abandonment rate at 70.22%, and our cart abandonment benchmark breaks that down further. But software only catches shoppers after they leave. The tests in our A/B test database show that fixing the cart itself often moves revenue more, so this page covers both.
We have not used these tools ourselves. What follows is based on vendor pricing pages, help docs and Shopify App Store listings, checked in November 2026.
| Tool | Free plan | Paid plans start at | SMS | Best for | Not for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Omnisend | 250 contacts, 500 emails/month | $16/month (App Store listing) | Pay per message | Small and mid-size Shopify stores that want email, SMS and popups in one place | Brands that need deep custom data and reporting |
| Klaviyo | 250 active profiles, 500 emails/month | $20/month for 251-500 contacts | Add-on credits | Growing brands that will segment heavily and run many flows | Stores on a tight budget with a large, inactive list |
| Shopify native | 10,000 emails/month | $1 per 1,000 extra emails | Select countries | New stores and anyone who wants one simple reminder | Stores that want multi-step, segmented flows |
| Postscript | None ($49 monthly minimum spend) | $0/month platform fee on Starter, plus messages | SMS-first | Shopify brands with a large, engaged SMS list | Stores that have not built email flows yet |
Omnisend: email, SMS and popups in one Shopify app
Omnisend is an email and SMS platform built mainly for ecommerce. Its pricing page says every plan, including the free one, includes prebuilt automated workflows for cart abandonment.
Pricing as of November 2026
- Free: 250 contacts and 500 emails a month, per the Omnisend pricing page.
- Standard: starts at $16/month for 500 contacts on the Shopify App Store listing. The vendor pricing page showed a lower $11.20/month when we checked, which looks like a promotional rate, so confirm the price at signup.
- Pro: starts at $59/month for 2,500 contacts on the App Store listing, with unlimited email sends. SMS starts at $0.007 per message on Pro.
What it does well
The cart flow, signup popups and SMS live in one app, so a small team does not have to connect three tools. The App Store listing shows a 4.7-star rating across about 3,200 reviews, and reviewers often mention quick setup and the abandoned cart flow.
That matters because recovery only works if you have the shopper's email or phone number. Signup forms are part of the same system. In one of our tests, Dave Diederen removed the email popup from a store and saw -20.51% revenue per visitor, a loss. Removing list capture cost more than the popup's friction saved. If you need a separate popup tool, see our Shopify popup apps roundup.
Downsides and who it is not for
Omnisend's segmentation and reporting are simpler than Klaviyo's, according to public comparisons and reviews. Brands that want to build flows on custom events, subscription data or complex product logic may outgrow it. Pricing also rises with contact count, so clean your list before it grows.
Klaviyo: deeper segmentation for growing brands
Klaviyo is the email and SMS platform many larger Shopify brands use. Its App Store listing shows a 4.7-star rating across about 3,400 reviews, and abandoned cart and welcome flows come built in.
Pricing as of November 2026
- Free: up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month, per Klaviyo's pricing page. The Klaviyo help center notes free accounts get email support only for the first 60 days and must show Klaviyo branding.
- Email: starts at $20/month for 251-500 contacts on the App Store listing.
- SMS: listed from $15/month for SMS/MMS credits.
What it does well
Klaviyo syncs Shopify data in real time and lets you split cart flows by cart value, product, past orders or engagement. That is useful when a $40 first-time cart and a $400 repeat-customer cart should get different messages. It also connects to 350+ apps, according to the listing.
Downsides and who it is not for
Billing is based on active profiles, not just the people you email. One App Store reviewer warned that "you can be billed based on the number of active profiles...not simply the number of people you are actually emailing." Stores with a large list of old, unengaged contacts can pay more than they expect.
Klaviyo is also more than a new store needs. If you will only ever run a two-email cart reminder, the extra power is cost without return. For a closer look at the two main options, read Omnisend vs Klaviyo.
Shopify native abandoned cart recovery: free, simple, limited
Every Shopify store already has basic recovery built in. Since October 2022, you can automate an abandoned checkout, abandoned cart or product browse email from the Marketing section of the admin, without a third-party app.
How it works
Shopify counts a checkout as abandoned when it stays incomplete for more than ten minutes after the customer has entered an email, according to the Shopify Help Center. You choose how long to wait before the email sends, and you can add a discount.
The same page lists cases where no email goes out: the customer already bought, there was a payment error, the store cannot ship to the address, or the customer gave a phone number instead of an email.
Pricing as of November 2026
Shopify's messaging tool lets you send up to 10,000 manual or automated emails a month for free, then charges $1 per 1,000 extra emails, according to Shopify's email marketing page. It is available on all Shopify plans, and SMS is offered in select countries.
Downsides and who it is not for
Segmentation, A/B testing of flows and reporting are basic next to Omnisend or Klaviyo. If email already drives a large share of your revenue, the native tool will feel thin. For a new store that wants one solid reminder email live today, it is the right starting point.
Fix the cart before you pay for recovery
Recovery software works on the shoppers who already left. Baymard's research lists extra costs (40%), slow delivery (20%) and not trusting the site with card details (19%) as top reasons people abandon. Those are fixed on the page, not in an inbox. Our tests show how much that can be worth:
- Dave Diederen changed the cart copy from "Free shipping will be applied at checkout" to "Congrats! You unlocked FREE shipping!" and saw +11.08% conversion rate.
- Dave Diederen hid a pre-ticked shipping protection checkbox in the cart and saw +6.39% conversion rate. A surprise fee is exactly the kind of extra cost Baymard describes.
- Dave Diederen showed customer reviews on the checkout page and saw +17.96% conversion rate.
- Not every shortcut works. When Dave Diederen skipped the cart and sent shoppers straight to checkout, conversion dropped -10.23%.
- Kasper Dolk removed a countdown timer from checkout and reported CVR +25.61% and RPV +26.18%, an estimated +€150k a month.
- Oliver Kenyon added tiered spend rewards to the cart (free shipping plus bonus items) and reported +$57k a month.
Results like these depend on the store, so test them on yours. Our checkout checklist lists what to review first.
SMS options for abandoned cart recovery
SMS is a second channel, not a replacement for email. It only reaches shoppers who gave a phone number and agreed to receive marketing texts, and US carriers and laws set strict consent rules. Start with email, then add SMS for the shoppers who opted in.
SMS inside Omnisend or Klaviyo
The simplest route is the SMS built into your email tool, so one flow can send an email first and a text later. Omnisend charges per message, from $0.007 per SMS on Pro (Omnisend pricing, as of November 2026). Klaviyo sells SMS credits as an add-on, listed from $15/month on its App Store page. Shopify's own messaging tool offers SMS in select countries.
Postscript: an SMS-first tool
Postscript focuses on SMS for Shopify brands and includes a cart and browse abandonment automation template. Per Postscript's pricing page as of November 2026:
- Starter: $0/month with a $49 monthly minimum spend, $0.009 per SMS plus carrier fees.
- Growth: $100/month, $0.008 per SMS.
- Professional: $500/month, $0.007 per SMS.
Postscript makes sense for brands with a large, active SMS list that want SMS-specific tools such as two-way replies. It is not for stores that have not built email flows yet, or that run email on Klaviyo or Omnisend and would be paying twice for flows they already have.
Which setup to choose
- New store, small list: Shopify's built-in automation, plus a signup form to grow the list.
- Growing store that wants one app: Omnisend, with SMS turned on later.
- Brand with lots of data and segments: Klaviyo.
- Large, engaged SMS list: add Postscript next to your email tool.
Whichever tool you pick, the message matters as much as the software. Our guide to cart abandonment emails covers timing, discounts and copy, and the cart tests in our database show what to fix before the email is ever needed.
