Cart with free shipping bar and in-cart upsells: +$27K/month
A cart update with a free shipping progress bar and in-cart upsells added $1.96 revenue per session, forecast at $27,000 per month. Oliver Kenyon ran this test. The team removed an upsell pop-up, moved upsells into the cart and set the free shipping threshold just above average order value.
- +$1.96 revenue per session. This is the most direct measure of the change.
- +$27,000 per month in forecast revenue.
- +$324,000 per year forecast, which is the monthly figure multiplied by 12.
The change
Upsell pop-up replaced by in-cart upsells, plus a free shipping progress bar.
Simplified mockup drawn by LiftArchive from the shared screenshots.
Control
The cart drawer listed the items and a subtotal with one button at the bottom. Upsells were shown in a separate pop-up.
Variant
The cart drawer now shows a cart count, a free shipping progress bar, the items with size, a You May Also Like row with add buttons, and a Checkout Now button. The upsell pop-up was removed.
Why it likely won
Our reading of the result, not the practitioner's claim.
- setting the free shipping goal just above the usual order size gives most shoppers a reachable reason to add one more item.
- upsells inside the cart feel like help, while a pop-up blocks the path to checkout.
- a clear Checkout Now button removes doubt about the next step.
Caveats: Several changes were tested together, so we cannot say which one drove the lift. No sample size, test length, conversion rate or average order value figures were shared.

How to run this test on your store
- Hypothesis
- If we replace our upsell pop-up with in-cart upsells and add a free shipping bar set just above our average order value, then revenue per visitor will rise because shoppers add more without being interrupted.
- Primary metric
- Revenue per visitor
- Guardrails
- Average order value
- Checkout start rate
- Margin after shipping costs
- Who should test it
- Stores with a cart drawer and a shipping cost they can absorb above a threshold. If you already offer free shipping on every order, the bar part of this test does not apply.
Questions
Where should I set my free shipping threshold?
This team set it just above average order value. That makes the goal reachable for most shoppers with one more item.
Are upsell pop-ups or in-cart upsells better?
In this test, moving upsells into the cart and dropping the pop-up was part of a change worth $1.96 more revenue per session.
Does a free shipping progress bar increase order value?
It was part of the winning cart here, but it was tested alongside other changes. Its own effect was not measured separately.
